I hate the way these used to be done via auction, like the poppy day kits. It's basically putting them into the hands of 'professional' collectors who then sell on for further profit and can therefore pretty much out-bit your average fan who might just want them for no other reason (i.e. financial gain) than just having them on their wall/shelf. Even if not bought to sell-on late on, it's still basically meaning a fan who earns a damn sight more than most of us can simply out bid your average urchin.
I think this point was made and the club saw sense?
