| love today.... on 08:39 - Jan 12 by GaryBannister86 | I know that it shows my age, and it was a decent day and I am grateful Nourry / Stephan put out the best side we could. But I just can't "love" going out the cup yet again, losing to West Bloody Ham and I am not that proud of the lads. They did OK in my eyes, not much more. They aren't fit enough. I will be proud when we actually win. West Ham were so bad, so short on confidence, I am certain it was a missed opportunity. We played the cagey game in the first half, which was all about getting the break at 0-0, but squander the whole plan and possession with 1 minute to go of it, when we had an attacking throw on and could just have kept the ball. So annoying. And yes having a huge away support was fun, but yet again when we have one....we lose. There was a moment in the second half yesterday, before he scored, when Kone did that arms thing at the away end to get more noise. Always hate that, but considering he hadn't moved his oversized backside at that point more than 5cm all game, really took the biscuit and sums up every time we have a huge away support. We're there, the players not so much. I was hugely annoyed with him at this point, but then he of course proved his worth in the end. Fair play. Our standards have slipped so low generally, and specifically in the cup, that we enjoy a 3rd round cup defeat at a relegation-haunted (and very poor) Premier League side. Yes, I am old and bitter and twisted. Standards. Sorry. Edit: I meant to say, this is just how I feel, not claiming everyone should feel this way. And life is about enjoyment, so I am jealous of those who felt it was a great day. I am just grumpy as yet again no 4th round draw to look forward to! [Post edited 12 Jan 8:55]

I tend to agree with you about our standards. Like last season at Leicester, this was another chance to beat a Championship bound team in the 3rd round and all that was achieved was extending our own miserable record of 3rd round defeats , 53 and counting. Well that's one record we won't be relinquishing any time soon!!

Yes, so one conclusion (from this occurring two years running) would be that beating a team in the bottom three of the Prem, desperate for a win, is not as easy as it might appear! Might not be a QPR thing? Burnley stuffed Millwall 5:1...and Wolves won 6:1. All about expectations. Glass half-full or half-empty? We exceeded my expectations and if we were more fortunate with a home draw for that game or if the replay rule still applied, a one-all draw after 90 minutes would have been considered a "result"! We weren't perfect, but i still consider that a worthy effort and hopefully a big step forward for this team and its relationship with our fans after some iffy away performances.

We wasted the first half and conceded a really soft goal. When we did put a good spell together for 10 mins we scored one and created problems for them but then didn't seem to have the legs or energy to do that again. We looked dead on our feet in extra time and with the injuries again our subs really weakened the team. Could have done with Vale on the bench to come on instead of Bennie who tried but has very little experience of senior football. There were a lot of positives in the day. Joe Walsh was excellent in goal, Jimmy Dunne played well, Madsen and Hayden really good, Kolli was impressive and really liked Paul Smyth on the left. The goal and the celebrations were great but saying all that West Ham were not great and with a bit more belief I think we could have beaten them. We certainly deserved a replay if that was still a thing. Rory Jennings is not everyone's cup of tea and he said this to wind people up but again wasn't wrong when he said any other Championship side would have probably won that game. |
There are a few points to debate about the bench. It was clearly light on attacking options as Burrell is injured and Frey and Vale were omitted altogether. Only Bennie and Smyth could provide attacking replacements. With Saito's injury and Smyth coming on early, that narrowed our options further and likely led to players remaining on the pitch longer than otherwise. Interesting Esquerdinha being on the bench but then using Field as left back.

| love today.... on 09:44 - Jan 12 by TheChef | I'm also old and bitter and twisted, I also would just like to win a Cup game for once! Feels like you had to be in the stadium to enjoy(?) it. I was only able to watch the first half on TV which was dull, West Ham were terrible and definitely felt beatable, and we concede that shit goal right on half time. Then you had Saito going off with yet another hamstring injury, Dembele who boils my piss (yes I know he got the assist), I'd kick him out the club if I could. Of course nearly any other season at full time we'd have got the replay back at LR, although god knows what team we'd field for that one. And it's Monday. |
I would add this about Dembele, that free kick would embarrass a Sunday league player. Also, I have just watched Barnsley at Liverpool. They are a League 1 side up against a top Premiership team and they created a lot of chances and imo put up a far more impressive performance than QPR did yesterday. Their winger Cleary looked very impressive and was McCoist’s choice for motm , again, more impressive than either Smyth or Dembele . However, overall yesterday was a massive improvement on QPR’s last 5 seasons of 3rd round disappointments.
