Couple of (vaguely) Dale-related thoughts 21:13 - Oct 6 with 1184 viewsD_Dale

Looking through the various results today, I started with Barnsley, and KH's unhappiness with the ref:

"[The referee] has got a major decision seriously wrong. That is unexplainable. When referees don't apologise when they have made a mistake it becomes a little bit disrespectful at times.

"I just wonder if the assessor has told the referee a major decision has decided the outcome of the game and he has got it wrong - not just wrong, seriously wrong. It wasn't marginal.

"Whose job will it affect? Whose opinion will it affect when they look at that league table and won't consider the performance? It will affect a lot of Barnsley supporters who couldn't make it today."

The Tykes fielded four players who'd appreared for Dale - Wiseman , Perkins, Dagnall, Etuhu - and had Kennedy and Done as subs. Also in the Championship O'Grady started for Sheffield Wed, substituted by Gary Madine, and four other matches featured Glenn Murray, Gilks, Buckley and Jordan Rhodes.

Checking other teams, a majority of League 2 matches featured ex-Dale players - two central defenders, Branston and Trotman - for Aldershot and Chesterfield. Amankwaah at Exeter, with Dodds and Shuker playing for Port Vale. Rene Howe scored for Torquay at Wycombe and Ball, playing alongside Alan Goodall, scored for Fleetwood. Joe Widdowson played for Northampton (Clive Platt was an unused sub.) Jack Redshaw started for Morecambe against Burton (Stanton on their subs' bench). McArdle and Atkinson played for Bradford (Darby and Jones on the bench). Deane Smalley put in 45 minutes for Oxfors against Gillingham.

There's a sprinkling in L1 - Thompson who scored within 5 minutes of comimg on for Akpa Akpro, and Fon Williams at Tranmere, Symes at London Orient, and Nicky Adams scoring for Brentford and Cansdell-Sherriff sent off for Preston. Kallum Higginbotham was on the winning side, Carlisle, against Walsall, who had Dean Holden in defence. Newey was on the losing side, Scunthorpe, at Stevenage.

And half a dozen in the Conference, including goals from Simon Grand, Joe Shaw and Barnes-Homer, and three in the Prem: Holt, Le Fondre and (on the bench) Craig Dawson.

While allowing that there's a lot more movement of players due to the loan system, it wasn't all that many years ago that most players who took the road to Spotland were either older ones, after a bit of success elsewhere at the end of their careers, or younger ones destined not to improve enough to rise to higher levels.

I think part of the reason Coleman got the job is his history of producing gems to sell on. With our youthful defence you never know

It takes a while to keep track of our former players on a Saturday evening now.
Somebody should write a regular piece about them all.

JLAA went off with a suspected broken metatarsal.

You've got the wrong Jones at Bradford, Gary jones wasn't in the squad, it was Ritchie Jones on the bench, and Nicky Adams scored for Crawley.

But, a good round up non the less, saves time searching myself for everyone lol.

Just thinking about Goalies on the t'other page;

Gilksy still holding his own at Blackpool ... even though they lost yesterday 0-2 to Charlton.

Heaton also on the wrong end of a 0-2 scoreline at Bristol City. Nugent got one of them - probably a toe poke on the line!

Any others....?
