We got away with it, because their stumpy No. 7 Franks was a shite crosser, putting the ball way over the top of their attackers every time. Even when he tried to dink one, it went out for a throw in - good on the eye but shite!
Looking back to last year's opener, I thought Hartlepool were much better than Northampton, and they made the play-offs.
On another note, occasional visitor bobbyjoe turned up today and enjoyed himself. This in itself tells us how well we played!
My gut feeling is we won today in 3rd gear. Instinct tells me that Hilly will be demanding improvements all over the field.
And, without Hogan, we might lack teeth.
But, a great opener, a great game. Nice to feel part of the team again. We were royally entertained today for the first time since...

I think the issue is that Hartlepool missed two great chances before we had even got going. If they'd have been 2-0 up the game could have been finished before we started playing properly.

It's not only the options within the squad that are impressive, but the options out on the pitch at any one time. So many players can interchange roles with ease and that immediately creates a problem for the opposition. Still not 100% sure what position Hogan was playing yesterday; at times he was up against the centre half in a front two, then he'd pop up wide - that's almost impossible for the other team to manage unless they designate a man-marker. It reminded me of how Chris Waddle played for Sheff Wed for a while - he was allowed to go anywhere to cause damage, but fit back into the team structure when they didn't have the ball. |  |

There was a bloke sat a couple of seats from me in the stand equipped with a clipboard, teamsheet and plenty of paper marked out like a football pitch. Him and his companion were either from Doncaster or Burton I suspect, doing a 'recce' for the forthcoming games..
He was marking out players in various positions, how we set up at corners, free-kicks and the like and who played where. He was making all sorts of diagrams, notes and little sketches. I lost count of the times he seemed to scribble out what he had just drawn/written simply because he presumably lost track of who was where because of the options we explored.
I hope the relevant team is just as confused when we line up against them in the coming weeks. | | | |

I would love to have seen the finished article with all the scribbling outs - I bet it would look like a spider's abortion in the end!
I liked the Wayne Rooney type runs Donnelly was making when he runs slightly backwards at the start of his run to time his runs to perfection. Hill said Donnelly is faster than Holt and Lambert, when comparing, and that is one of his biggest assets. That makes it so exciting to watch. Most, if not all, of the 50:50 races were won by Donnelly. He still needs to improve his one on ones (learn from the master...Henderson) and his passing once he has got into that forward position can be good or bad.
Exciting times to be a Dale fan and worth every penny. We just have to pinch ourselves and smell the coffee. |  |

How they didn't score is beyond me - aside from the sitters already mentioned, Lillis made what looked like an outstanding save in injury time to tip one effort over the bar.
Cav and Lund complimented each other well in the middle and always provided an option for the defence. Feel some of the stick Rafferty is getting is a little unfair as their right side often looked to double up on him. In the first half, their passing was being zipped around and they looked a right handful on the break.
The second half was a different story. Vincenti won every header and we'll no doubt see a lot of Lillis's goal kicks head out to the right wing. Though the whole team looked like it had been honed throughout pre-season, special praise must go to the front four. Donnelly's movement was brilliant and with Hogan constantly flitting in and around him, they'll prove a handful for any defence in this league. Henderson, Done and Vincenti all offer something slightly different but Henderson is so important in that he knows exactly what pace to slow or quicken the game up/down to, constantly making angles and encouraging the full backs forward.
All in all, a hugely encouraging and entertaining start. If this continues, any fears I had about a lack of depth up top will soon look ridiculous. |

Couldn't tell from the Sandy re: Lillis's save in injury time, but as you say, the save with his feet after Rose's miscued clearance was brilliant.
Did anybody else watch Hery warming up? At one point, he ran backwards but stretched his legs right out, as though he was doing backward lunges whilst running. That's a rubbish description but it was bloody impressive all the same! |  | | |

One of my biggest positives taken from Saturday was that Matty Lund has the ability to be every bit as good as Jason Kennedy, if not better. I'm not saying he's at that level yet, but soon could be. A more than suitable replacement in my opinion.
On George Donnelly, he seems to be better when he plays off instinct, like when he knows he hasn't got time to think about it, because when he does have time or a couple of options, his head can fall off at the crucial time, on the odd occasion. Given the improvement we've seen since Hilly's return however, I don't think it will be long before that changes. And then he will be a real force in L2. | |

The fitness levels for the first week in August is credit to Hilly - The coaching team and the players themselves.

Well chuffed with the performance and result. I don't think we got out of 3rd gear (2nd in the first half), but the encouraging signs from pre-season were there for all to see in a proper game. The scoreline could have been a lot closer but for a fantastic save from Lillis and some poor finishing, but we were good value for the 3 points.
I thought the midfield and striker(s) were excellent. Cavanagh controlled the midfield, which allowed Lund to get further forward than expected. Henderson, Vincenti & Hogan ran well with the ball and caused all sorts of issues. The aerial outlet of Vincenti is going to be a great asset, but he can play with the ball on the deck too. Donnelly put himself about and his movement was fantastic, he looks like a different player.
Hogan would have been my MOTM, but closely followed by Cavanagh and Lund. [Post edited 5 Aug 2013 20:47]
