Do we actually need a manager/head coach? 19:56 - Apr 8 with 552 viewsbosh67

Based on the fact that none of the ones we have put in bar Warnock have actually achieved anything of great note.

Is having a manager/coach a bit old school? A bit been there-done that?

After all Luigi De Canio famously (apparently) came in and said 'play 4-3-3 where you can, attack and work out how you want to play on the practice fields' according to Fitz Hall, Martin Rowlands and Ákos Buzsáky. The players allegedly took their own sessions and De Canio had about 4 or 5 players take smaller sessions as captains. A lot of the time they worked it out themselves. De Canio then used to play the games back to them, point a few things out via a translator and let them get on with it. The players ran the team. De Canio then took them out on bonding sessions and included the whole squad so they all felt part of it. But he wasn't essentially a typical manager or coach. He picked the starting 11 and talked to the players about the bench.

That's just an example. Warnock managed to instil a captain's mentality into most players, even Adel. But he had a number of captain's on that field. I haven't seen that since. There aren't many managers like that and right now the players seem completely baffled. So, perhaps the players need to decide how they want to play and a formation and perhaps they would actually get their act together because there wouldn't be anyone to baffle them with pseudo football science.

Players are well capable of sorting themselves out if you have a few good captain types in the dressing room. We have Cameron, Rangel, Freeman, Luongo. They can all stand up. The shame is that the one that was apparently really excellent in the backrooms was Baptiste. The players went to him in training and listened to him in the changing room. Since he's gone what have we done? It's about having influential characters in that environment, not necessary managers. Baptiste may not have been the best player but he had influence and for the most part that had some impact. Self rule.

I guess someone has to pick the team. Perhaps just have De Canio and a translator on speed dial!

Never knowingly right.

Queens Park Rangers
De Canio was announced as first team coach of English Championship team Queens Park Rangers on 29 October 2007, succeeding the recently sacked John Gregory.[7] He started his QPR experience with a 2—0 home win to Hull City on 3 November.[8] Rangers signed several players during the January transfer window: Ákos Buzsáky who had previously been on loan from Plymouth Argyle, Hogan Ephraim from West Ham, Kieran Lee on loan from Manchester United, Gavin Mahon on loan from Watford, Matthew Connolly from Arsenal, Patrick Agyemang from Preston and Fitz Hall from Wigan. Early in January QPR also managed to secure striker Rowan Vine in a permanent move following his brief loan spell which had ended in December. During his period in charge of the club, De Canio became a very popular figure among the QPR faithful, due to the style and flair he brought back to their game. As a result he was, along with the club's owners, immortalised in the supporters' song "Gigi De Canio, Bernie and Flavio" (to the tune of La donna è mobile).[9]

De Canio left the club by "mutual consent" after the end of the season in May 2008, having guided them to fourteenth place in the Championship.[10] His record at the club comprised 12 wins, 12 losses and 11 draws in 35 games. It has reported that his return to Italy was partly due to a bid to save his marriage.[11]

Can someone find out if indeed he did save his marriage and if so can he come back and save us!!!!

captains fantastic
