"The right sorts" 10:31 - Nov 12 with 1033 views | davman | Can't help but feel that we are mentally fragile as a team and struggle against the many physical teams in the Championship who look to be "bullying" us and the ref. Is it because the "right sorts" we recruit are nice lads, proficient at the basic skills who aren't well, in the least "nasty"? Take our centre backs. Of the five "first team" ones we have it is only Jimmy Dunne who looks like he will, Richard Dunne / Clint Hill style "take no shite". JCS, Balogun, Dickie, Masterson - all "cultured" centre backs. "Defensive" Midfield - Amos, Dozzell, Field, Iroebugnam - nice lads, no dangerous tackle in any of them aside from Tim's one first minute v Narwch. Field picks up bookings, but these are for "cynical" / tactical fouls. Compare our approach to the many teams that rotate the foul rota on Willock / Chair / whoever. ... And how often do we surround these weak as pss "officials" we get week after week like every other team at this level does. Not talking about tvvats like Barton; I am talking about GENUINE hard men like Lord Derry was... Looking Ford to the neanderthal Madfadzen beasting us at set pieces today...

I don’t think it applies to squad that has a former Norwegian captain in it, and a player that has played through a dozen Old Firm games, or Lyndon Dykes who’s speciality is penalties and bullying CBs like Grant Hanley etc. Also Sam Field who played on earlier in the week with a hole in his head. I wouldn’t say it’s a slur but I don’t think it’s justified (yet). I’ve not seen any of these players pull out of tackles or dominated by a single team really (Luton maybe?). We’re 6th in the league (could be 4th at 5pm) in a league we are expected to finish 16th in. That shows mental strength to me. The Redknapp / Hughes era was blighted by it (whatever it is) but not these guys. [Post edited 12 Nov 2022 11:12]

Maybe, but to me we have so many "confidence" players - they look brilliant when they are on it, but very, very average when we are up against it and the oppo is safely running the clock down with players behind the ball. Aside from Sunderland and Reading, I can't think of any game this season we have won after going behind and of those games it was only really a "comfortable" comeback against Reading (Sunderland was a real Derby away moment). That might not be a mental thing, but I think that it is - the mindset when going behind is very different for when we go ahead. One goal behind isn't much, yet on Tuesday, we got more and more desperate with every attack, zero composure and despite 36 shots of which two were truly threatening, didn't ever look like we were carving them open. ...and for all his improvement (which I am really happy with), Lyndon Dykes simply does not bully ANYONE on the football pitch - he goes down awfully easily for a "big man"... Stefan maybe, but he's missing or not fit more often than not these days. Agree on the expectation thing and we probably are punching above our weight still, but our first team, on its day would beat anyone in this league; it is just really, really frustrating that on this recent run, even with most of them back we're struggling. Lets hope that there is a turnround today...

"The right sorts" on 13:16 - Nov 12 with 792 views | Logman | I wouldn't say that we are mentally fragile all round but I do think we have one or two who go into their shells if we go behind. I'm astonished that we don't have a sports psychologist to work on the mental side. I sit in front of the area where the youth team players and coaches sit and I was talking to one of the youth trainers and he said that there is no sports psychologist and that Beale deals with that side of the coaching. A sports psychologist would be the first appointment for me.
