You would have thought that someone in the Meta UK marketing team would have called this out.

Whilst infamous I suspect Threads these days is fairly niche and completely unknown to Gen Z. Or Alpha, or whichever one it is that comes after Millenials that probably make up most of the Meta UK marketing team!
Threads on 17:35 - Jul 5 with 1510 views | E17hoop | Just catching up on this launch and I won't be going anywhere near it. It launches in the UK but isn't allowed to be launched in the EU because of the data privacy issues, i.e. highly sensitive information about users can be collected in order to profile digital activity – including health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, search history and other sensitive information. Plus we have no idea where they'll store the data or backup that data. It won't be in the EU so who knows where it might end up.

How would they collect data about health and finance unless they ask for this information and if you give it then more fool you.

someone needs to educate themselves on the data Protection Act here's a link for you. https://www.gov.uk/data-protection It differs very little from the EU's GDPR (on which it was based) and in fact in some circumstance is tougher, including when it comes to penalties. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Come on. You’re not trying to tell us there is more protection from a UK act of parliament than that of the EU

I'm fully aware of GDPR. The EU insist on organisations asking for and obtaining specific permission for processing sensitive data like health info. The UK doesn't and the ICO would have to challenge retrospectively AFTER a breach. The UK regs also don't restrict the use of sensitive data in provision of adverts. In the EU it isn't unusual for explicit consent to be required. Meta were fined over $1bn recently for shipping data from EU servers elsewhere without permission and they still don't provide the opportunity to opt out of data collection, making the GDPR as a prevention tool very limited. Of course the UK has guidelines but the passive approach in retrospect has been proven to be seriously weak in ICO encounters with the tech giants.
