Fortunately this isn't how league tables work 😉. The improvement needed to make the playoffs is roughly one point more in the second half of the season than we got in the first half.
Yeah I was actually trying to compare the two games in terms of how dominant we / Coventry were, but hard to be objective. Felt like if we hadn't had to stop for half time we could have scored as many as we want, can't remember seeing an opposition team look so clearly checked out and rattled. Probably needed to score early second half to keep the momentum going, although Kone had a good chance to score which could have opened the flood gates further.
It's a shame, and didn't see it coming, probably because my main connection to QPR is this message board.
I actually felt sorry for Marti watching it yesterday because that Leicester team is clearly full of absolute weapons, must be a difficult dressing room. And from Twitter last night their supporters clearly expect them to be going up again this season.
I mean, the thought of competing in the premiership is ludicrous... But football is where I come to park the grounded objectivity portion of my brain, so I'm all for dreaming of an unlikely promotion push tbh . To go from Coventry to challenging for playoffs would be a hell of a story - and fairly on brand tbh
I'll admit to looking at the table last night and thinking there's not really anyone outside the top two to be especially fearful of. And if you look at our games over Xmas we're playing three of the bottom four, and West Brom who are bottom half... In principle there's no reason not to be aiming for a big points haul that would take us into January well in the mix...
What a difference it makes when both wide players are on it, has that happened this season?
And like Tyler said, if you could pick three players who would benefit from a goal Kone, Saito and Dembele would be up there. Madsen scoring in the second half would be icing on the cake.
Lovely to address the goal difference Coventry deficit. We want 7!
I was at an AI workshop earlier this year and the facilitator challenged us to think of a domain which was immune to be dramatically changed by AI. I said sport, because people wouldn't want to sit around watching machines competing - robot wars notwithstanding. He argued that there would be a future where we should be doing precisely that, essentially watching CGI renderings of probabilistically determined 'sports'. Sounds shit if you ask me. But then in the middle east there's a huge market for the premiership and people chop and change their allegiances from game to game so 🤷♂️
The 70s is before my time, the Les, Sinton et al team was what I grew up up on, but Adel, Faurlin et al were the team that really got under my skin in the way that can only happen when you're travelling to games a lot, drinking on trains etc., and celebrating in pubs afterwards. I think it was made more special by the years of shite beforehand. There were times were you had to pinch yourself, like, "I didn't think we were allowed nice things?!"
The win away at Reading with ten men in particular was a moment where you just knew this was our year.
Classic QPR for the whole Faurlin affair to hang over the end of the season of course.
I was home for Xmas, and took my brother who doesn't watch football to watch that game. At full time he produced one of the all time under statements, "Your number seven is pretty good isn't he"
One of those rare games where watching football is genuinely joyful
I'm baffled by those expressing bafflement. It would be a boring sport if supporters had no opinion or feeling about their opposition - no rivalries, no narratives etc. Might as well watch cricket.
I also disagree with the post to the top somewhere that appreciation for Marti would be an insult to Stéphan. To the contrary, I'd imagine it would be reassuring that we as supporters appreciate and show our appreciation to our good managers.
I'd imagine he'll get a warm reception, give a wave to the crowd, get some applause, and then game on, with both sides desperate to beat the other , given where we are in the table, the looming Xmas fixture list, and the satisfaction both Marti and the QPR players would get out of getting one up on the other.
A brief, low-energy raising of the eyebrows paired with minimal head tilt and puckering of the corners of the mouth, communicating acknowledgement without committing to a smile.
I listened to their episode on Empire Strikes Back last week. Always the same, I tell myself that I will end up wanting to rewatch whatever they're covering, no matter how unlikely that seems beforehand... Surely I'm not going to rewatch a star wars film I've watched a thousand times.... And yet here we are , me looking for a window to put it on when everyone's in bed
Other half picked the film last weekend. "No Korean films, nothing weird, I want to watch Sorry, Baby". Ok fine, stick it on, oh - it's A24!
Really good film, found out afterwards the lead Eva Victor, who is fantastic, also directed it, and it's her debut - very impressive
It's a film about trauma. Kermode said he thought the tone is too jarring in places given the subject matter, but for me (and from the reviews, most others) this is the film's strength. The humour and naturalistic way that people behave really grounds it. There's a scene immediately after "the bad thing" in the hospital that captures this perfectly.
There's another kind of incidental scene on the face of it between Victor and the owner of a sandwich bar that I found really beautiful. The subtle physical acting, the intimacy at a distance between two strangers. Very affecting.
Solid 8/10, and will be keeping an eye out for her next film.
