My abiding memory of that season was quite scary.
The 3rd round FA cup replay against Chelsea on the afternoon (yes afternoon, 2pm K.O. due to the power cuts) of 15th Jan.
Pay at the turnstile in those days so no segregation and inevitably I suppose the Loft got overrun with Chelsea.
My old man and I took up our positions just to the right of the Loft goal leaning against the children's wall.
Stan was getting lots of stick and when he scored the only goal of the game in the second half he gave it back.
At the final whistle Chelsea surged forward in numbers trying to get onto the pitch.
The children's wall cracked, gave way and people were tumbling all over each other.
Really frightening to say the least.
People were dazed and kids were crying.
I ended up on the pitch shoeless in the mud!
My old man ended up about 20 yards away from me.
He quickly came over, made sure I was OK and then we tried to find my shoes in amongst all the rubble.
All to no avail.
So I ended up walking down to the Bush market in my muddy socks to get a pair of plimsolls!
Funny thing was that a couple of weeks after this frightening incident our English class had to write individual essays with the subject being FEAR. |

I found George Sharps interview with Laura and Georgie most interesting.
But, unless I missed something, I still couldn't work out how many promotions it would take for the Ranger's ladies team to make it to the WSL.
Anyone know the answer? |

Hard to believe the great man is 80.
No Rodney no Stanley
No Rodney no League Cup triumph. Carlisle would have beaten us 1-0 in the 5th Round.
it's no exaggeration to say that it was because of Rod that we went on to have the success that we had in the following years.
Yes Jim Gregory put his hand in his pocket but that was only after Rod had been weaving his magic.
Rod was much more than "that hat-trick against Birmingham".
Those of us with long memories can remember seeing Rod score goals like that nearly every week.
And who can forget the Rodneeee chant that went around the ground.
Especially on a dark cold winters afternoon.
My-and many other's-all time favourite Ranger.
But you had to have lived in those times to truly appreciate the brilliance of the great Rodney Marsh.

The last time I went to Derby was back in 1990-the Baseball Ground- and Rangers were on an 8 game losing streak.
Two days before Christmas, a Sunday, and an early kick off.
St Pancras all but deserted apart from the travelling Rangers fans.
Roy Wegerle put the R's 1 up in the first half-his shot crashing down off the bar and adjudged to have crossed the line -which it did.
With the 90 minutes up it looked like our first 3 point haul since beating Leeds away (where Roy scored "that" goal).
Alas deep into injury time a scramble in the R's penalty box and Dean Saunders didn't miss from close range.

Having first started going to Rangers in the mid 60's (Oct 1 '66) obviously Rodney will forever be my favourite.
Second would have to be Clive Allen.
As my old man said after the April '79 5-0 thrashing of Coventry in which Clive netted a hat-trick "We've got a good 'un there."
Couldn't disagree with that. |

Three at the back, Karl REDDY-BREK ,Steve MARROW and Alan BIG-MAC-DONALD.
Five in midfield. Out on the right Andy WIMPEY, on the left Andy STILTON and the three in the middle. Tony CURRIE (of course) Terry VEGTABLES and Tjaronn CHERRY.
Upfront those two goal machines CODNEY Marsh and CHIVE Allen.
Manager? It has to be SMARTIE Cifuentes.
I'd give up my weekly Pukka pie to see this lot give anyone a beating! |

A pre-season friendly played in the middle of July and a crowd of 18439 turns up!
The G tech boys at Kew Bridge couldn't match that even if they had to win their last home game to lay their hands on the Premier League trophy.
As for the posh boys down by the river...well I can remember going down there in the late 80's early 90's and to speak to the nearest supporter you needed a mega phone.
Rangers support has been fantastic considering what's been served up recently.
Here's hoping the supporters are rewarded with a memorable season -for all the right reasons.
It's certainly deserved.

I went to the Arbroath friendly and if my memory serves me correct Rangers didn't have any fit goalkeepers available and we had to "borrow" Gordon Philips from Brentford. |

Brentford 0 QPR 2.
The first sighting of Peter Crouch.
Although he didn't score-Stuart Wardley and Richard Langley-Pete became an instant hit with the R's supporters chanting SIGN HIM UP! SIGN HIM UP!
Gerry Francis did just that.
The only bright spot in what turned out to be a disastrous season.

I used to go to Griffin Park with my old man for most home games back in the mid/late 60's as Rangers were away when the Bees were at home.
Loved it because under the covered home end there was a programme shop.
Every visit my old man let me choose two or three from various clubs.
Looking at the film the only thing missing ,from when I started going, at the Ealing Rd end are the tower blocks.
Most memorable game was a first round FA Cup tie versus Guildford City -December '67-
Match abandoned in the second half due to heavy snow.
Back to Brentford BR station and a warm up in the waiting room in front of a real open fire.
And the train back to Hounslow-despite the heavy snow- was on time!
Imagine that happening now.... |

The old Celtic friendlies were just that.Friendlies.
Those of us who are knocking on a bit age wise can remember a "friendly" here at the Bush back in early August 69 against Glasgow Rangers.QPR-relegated from Division 1- playing in their new away strip of red and black stripes in front of a crowd of over 16000.Needless to say the Glasgow team had a fair few who had travelled down to West London backing them.
The actual game ended 3-3 and was entertaining, but to say it was a niggly,feisty encounter would be an understatement with Rodney in particular getting roughed up to such an extent that eventually he snapped and punched Glasgow full back Johansen leading to Rod taking an early bath!
The headlines next day included PUNCH UP! and CALL THIS A FRIENDLY?!

It's said that one man doesn't make a team.
OK on that basis how do you think the history of Rangers since 1966-67 would have panned out if we hadn't signed Rodney and been deprived of his 44 goals that season?
Would we have achieved the same level of success that followed that amazing season?
Or would we have ended up being say the West London version of Orient?
I'm not pitching one against the other because both were fantastic player, but would we have had Stan play for us if Rod hadn't played for us first?
I'd like to think that the club would have gone on to be successful and gained promotion to Division 1/Premier league.
Yet success is relative and to me only being out of the top two tiers of English football for three seasons out of the last 57 for a club of our size is success.
The club we have become stems from that 1966/67 campaign. |

Who can forget that beautiful sunny day 25 years ago?
Final match of the season and the R's on a 5 game losing run.
Palace with nothing to play for so they could relax and enjoy themselves.
A must win game in front of a full house of 18500.
George Kulscar relieving the tension after 8 minutes and Chris Kiwomya adding a second on 43.
Palace's Fan sent off after 48 and Rangers start looking like a cross between Real Madrid and Barcelona-sort of!
The R's are 4-0 up by the time Palace are reduced to 9 men on 81 as Woozley sees red.
Tim Breaker adds number 5 on 82 and Kiwomya completes his hat-trick on 85.
At full time it's party time and the pitch is swamped with stunned yet jubilant R's fans.
As it turns out this was a MUST WIN game as other results would gave meant a draw or defeat would have seen Rangers going through the trap-door.
For me this result tops the thrashing of We All Love Leeds because of the poor run of form we were in and also because this was the last game.No follow up game to put things right.
Yep Palace were there for the taking but everything that day was just perfect.
Even the pints my old man and me supped later in the day seemed to be extra cold!
