On Morgan, just to be clear, I like him, think he's decent, I wanted him to go out on loan, I think it's no bad thing. My comment was more that a lot of people thought a loan wasn't a viable option for him not long ago but all seems to have changed. I've always thought it's the best option for him, as has been said, will help us find out whether he's up to it in a few months time or not. |

Great report and very much how I, and a lot of the support saw it.
Agree with you on Adamson. He’s playing better than I expected, and really sticking to his job, as 5th choice full back, you can’t expect more than that. Well done to him. But as you say, we do miss some attacking threat when he’s there. The marauding Mbengue (for the short time he was on) was looking a lot more dangerous. He’s still young though, so with confidence and time, could yet develop this side of his game.
Felt to me, controlling the game, having so much of the ball and playing some lovely stuff, it was the players that aren’t very technical (Smyth/Lloyd) that really struggled. Vale was the interesting one, and think Dave Mc summed him up perfectly before the season started to be more than just a “moments player”. At the moment, excuse the pun, he remains just that. Capable of brilliance but dispersed too frequently with poor decision making.
Ronnie back at centre back, and Mads and Kamara looking tidy in the middle, is that the end of the Ronnie as a holding midfielder experiment? I know from the transfer review chat, there was some disagreement on where he would be best long term but the Dunne injury may just have decided that.
Kolli, Burrell, Kone. In theory is 3 decent strikers at this level. A squad with those 3, plus midfield options if you’re playing with just one up is very promising and gives squad depth. Just feels such a waste not having him available. |

A good listen. I agree with the comments on Noury at the end too – probably best just to enjoy the ride and see where it takes us.
A couple of small things. I’m not sure if it was here or just the wider fanbase, but there seems to have been a lot of backtracking when it comes to Morgan’s loan move. I’m sure plenty of people were saying not that long ago that he was “beyond a loan”, yet now he’s off to Bradford and most people seem to think it’s a great move. What’s changed?
On Kamara, I remember quite a few people saying it was a decent signing only if he was going to be more of a squad player or cover option. If he was being brought in as a starter, the reaction seemed a lot less positive. It’s obviously early days, but he already looks like one of the best midfielders at the club to me, so maybe we all underrated that signing a bit – which is no bad thing.
The debate around Noury and the suggestion that some players wanted to stay is interesting as well. Seems be people thinking we need to sell and that keeping everyone sends the wrong message. While others see it as a sign that the squad is together and genuinely believes it can push for the top eight with the option to sell if it doesn't work.
My only concern with the “sell if it doesn't work” argument is that it’s not without risk. We probably thought something similar before, but then had Rob Dickie’s form fall off a cliff, Willock’s fitness problems, and Chair no longer attracting the same level of interest. Suddenly your bargaining position looks a lot weaker.
That said, I can’t see Ronnie dropping off in the same way Dickie did, and you’d think Burrell or Kone would still bring in a decent fee. Even so, there’s definitely some risk in leaving it until later. |

Disagree on Madsen.
Haven’t been impressed with him so far this season but tonight I was. His game is about setting the tempo keeping the ball moving. I don’t see him as playing the killer ball - although has that in the locker - he often plays that initial pass to open the game up and then others do the finishing touches. Think today when the others found themselves in those areas after receiving the ball, they were lacking in the quality. I only really remember him misplacing one pass and was so much more involved than he has been of late. He was also driving forward a bit more with the ball, carrying it like he doesn’t always do which was good to see.
That was decent from him tonight - my MOTM with his midfield partner very close behind. |

In a game we dominated possession, wasn’t surprised the ones that struggled most for us were Smyth and Lloyd, and that Madsen was back to his best. The second half subs weren’t a surprise in terms of who came off although for an inexperienced right back thought he did ok. My only criticism of him is that he’s still in that “very safe and cautious” mindset with the ball, which I get as he’s trying to show he can be trusted, but in a game like today, needed a bit more adventure like the left back.
I think that’s the best centre midfield pairing available to us based on what I’ve seen tonight. Chair, Poku, Kone…I’d have been confident of getting all 3 points had they been available. Just hope the injuries aren’t too bad. |

Since we were relegated from the Premier league, we've played about 11 consecutive seasons in the championship and our highest ever league finish has been when we've played 3-5-2.
I agree we're not setup for it now and I think in answer to the "Kone/Burrell" problem and fitting them both into the side. I think rotation and keeping them fresh is the right way, as I don't think we can get them into the side unless we go for the 4-4-2. I'd like it to work, but I think to take the team to the next level, we need to move away from that. |

We let in more goals than pretty much every other team last season, granted 7 of those were in one game playing the 'game model system', but even over the course of the season, we always seemed vulnerable when teams passed it through us as we were just too open and could be easily cut through. We were disappointing defensively. How much was keeper/how much was the system, I'm not sure.
A 4-4-2 playing it how we did for much of last season clearly hampered Kone, he wasn't as effective, Burrell playing wide like the weekend, not effective. Poku, playing in a 4--4-2, I don't think will be anywhere near as effective, Saito, poor last season, worse I think because he was playing in a 4-4-2, which doesn't help him.
Playing 4-4-2 feels like its being done to get the best from Burrell. A lot of the others don't benefit so much. I'm not sure how good Burrell is, and whether he warrants the faith. I like him, but not sure I like him to base a lot of my team and system around. |

While I agree it’s not really an option now. End of last season it would have been quite easy to have set the team up to pay a 3-5-2 with some basic recruitment.
You just really needed a left sided wingback to go with the Lampety acquisition, and rather than Kemper, a left sided centre back. The Gary Neville example is interesting because never in a million years would you play him as a wing back – either right side of the 3 (as Glenn Hoddle used to do), or not in the team, never wing back. A combination of Lampety, Smyth and Morgan on the Right I think is ok.
There were valid arguments for going with 3 over the summer. We had one of the worst records for goals conceded last season so clearly something has to change, and we love to give a set piece goal away too. A three from JCS, Edwards, Dunne, Mbengue, plus a signing, would be decent at this level and I think would have improved our defensive shape. But a major reason for making the move would have been to get Kone and Burrell playing as a pair and have a decent Kolli as backup to get some minutes as well. Although I appreciate things have moved on there. Chair would also be more central.
But I agree the recruitment of Poku, Dembele and Saito was clearly not with a back 3 in mind but, all 3 struggled last season for various reasons, and Burrell leapt above them making him difficult to leave out so I think it wouldn’t have been the worst idea in the world had we considered moving to that shape over the summer. |

It’s not really an option now but the obvious formation to get 2 strikers on the pitch together and not lose the the midfield would have been looking at a 3 at the back. A combination of the back 4 yesterday and/or JCS would be decent and a fit Lamptey and Paul Smyth would do a job on the other side as wing backs and Kone/Burrell as a pair would be exciting. But we’ve not gone down that route and looks like it will either be 4-4-2 or 1 of Kone or Burrell if we change formation, like yesterday, as don’t think either Burrell or Kone are suited to adjusting style and playing wide or deeper.
I thought yesterday was ok and early days but feels we’re missing a creative spark. A couple of times the ball found itself to Smyth, Vale, Chair, Poku, and just felt a more dynamic, attack minded player would have caused them all sorts of problems but we don’t really have that in the team but still hoping Poku can be that player. Appreciate Chair and Vale slightly different profile of players but reminded me a bit of England in some of the World Cup games where wide players got on the ball and felt if they’d been really on it they could have really transformed the performance.
Not too down after yesterday though. |

Enjoyed this. A couple of things I thought interesting. Our opponents on Saturday, Millwall, interesting you both see them as doing really well. I have a few Millwall supporting mates, and a season ticket holder’s message to me after I went against his Millwall won’t make top 10 prediction was: “ No chance, keepers shit, coopers too slow, RB just got injured, no real striker threat, and our best CM left. We also have the risk of Femi Azeez leaving”. So while seems we’re all talking them up, their fans not so confident.
I think Chair warrants more attention too. I was getting ready to post you forgot to cover Chair during the chat but near the end he was highlighted. Nevertheless, think he’s going under the radar a bit - could be a good thing - but I think he will be massive for us. A fully fit Chair adds more points and can see it being a big year for him. |

I just don’t get it though. You go ultra defensive, but you still have to have that out ball, that hoof up front and some legs to chase. We had nothing. We had better players, no one will convince me there’s were better although you will easily convince me they were more of a team that wanted it more. Southgate was hated for his negative approach, this was soooo much worse in a game he was supposedly made for. |

Sums it up perfectly. A manager coated for being defensive (Southgate), has just been outdone by Tuchel in terms of reverting to a negative, defensive approach. We had better players tonight, they had a better manager. What a wasted opportunity. |

Got to say I agree with all this. To have one of the best 90 minutes in many year, a cracking game and then to have a dig at those thinking TAA should have been in the squad was odd, especially given the full back (centre back by trade) playing in his position, got sent off for a reckless tackle that nearly cost us. Hardly a ringing endorsement, and as has been said, surely even now, while gloating in the delights of last night, TAA over Chalobah would have been a better choice?
Last night was always going to be a test of character, being able to win your duels and deal with a hostile occasion, and even if available I wouldn't have started Trent. We were fantastic.
BUT, Norway will be a very different game, as will the semi final if we make it. We will have a lot more of the ball so not just about winning your duels. Let's hope Konsa or Spence can perform. |

Great call for once staying up to watch that one. A real old school defensive performance - passion, heart and total comittment to the cause. Loved every second of it. Agree the subs made a really useful contribution, Dan Burn's header on the overhead kick was real guts personified. I think the red card was the right call, he was playing really well up until that point as well which was a shame. And what more can you say about Jude, surely a future England captain.
There's a pathway opening up to the final here...Let's not blow it in our next, very winnable game. |

3-7 days is the worst you can do. You either spend 2 or 3 weeks getting ready and acclimatise or you do a short 1-2 days and get out before the full impact hits. Not sure of the science behind it but that's the recommendation. From what I understand England Team are flying in 2 days before kick-off. |
