I agree Southgate was probably looking not to lose the game and that probably impacted on the players mindset. Win the first game and draw the second seems to be a common tournament theme.

However in saying that, there are times in matches when they look like they were thrown together just before the game.

Whether that is down to the managers tactics, players having been out through injury and trying to play them back to fitness, players carrying knocks or player burnout who knows. Their press especially often looks disjointed.

Scoring a goal and then dropping deeper and deeper must surely be down to the players mentality and a lack of leadership at the back. You would have thought Stones would be shouting at the midfield and attack to push further up the pitch. I can't believe any international manager sees that as a sensible tactic, although if Southgate has installed a mentality of whatever we do don't lose, that could be at the heart of it.

Guehi by far the best outfield player.

No leader at the back, no natural left back, no balance in midfield. TTA can't play there at international level, Foden and Bellingham want to play in the same position and both look as if they've played too many games, Rice looks a bit lost at times, as if he's never played with the other two before this tournament. Kane is no better than half fit and Saka seems to be carrying an injury or has been overplayed or both.

Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon must be thinking that they could have had more fun watching at home or on holiday rather than watching it from the bench with apparently no chance of getting a game.

Manager guilty of picking what he feels are his best 11 players rather than picking his best and fittest team.

This morning in a bid to restore confidence to the squad England played a friendly against a team of dustbins. With their superior mobility and greater ability to retain possession most observers felt the dustbins were good value for a 0-0 draw.

Players will kiss our badge one day and kiss somebody else's a week later if they are transferred.

It's a get what you can while you can sport. Those that make it to the top are set up to waste money and get ripped off. A Car is a means of transport and a watch is a watch. See the law of diminishing returns. Players on "as little" as £10 grand a week for 5 years can earn more than people on £30 grand a year can earn in 2 lifetimes.

If he gets a better offer and takes it up to him. He owes the club nothing and the club will dump him the second they think he can't perform in whatever division we are in.

Not unreasonable- experience of tournaments at a lower age level. Reports say he was on a salary of between £1.5 and £2 million (depending on which one you read) at Forest so potentially not ruled out financially.

Depends on who fed his name to the papers as to whether it has any legs.

I agree that we got found out too easily in tournaments.

If the Welsh FA either don't know who is better or won't pay for someone better then we have a problem.

Must have been a better offer than a fish supper in Rossi's, a tub of Joe's and the other side of the pond putting a block on transfer plans at the last minute.

Man City sue Premier League
at 11:09 5 Jun 2024

It's looking like a fight about money and who runs the premier league - if the oil rich foreign owners win then the gap between them and the rest, let alone the gap to any team that gets promoted, will be enormous.

The strength of the Premier League is that it is competitive. Man City have been the strongest team for 4 years but that isn't good enough for their owners. Their owners want to use their money to make the league even less competitive and for them to keep winning.

As ever money and greed looks to ruin everything.

Indeed.

Not a one man up top player but, with an injection of confidence, may work playing with a big centre forward. Didn't fit into our tactics and didn't look happy on the pitch a lot of the time.

The signings of Yates and Kuharevich suggested that someone on the recruitment side might have thought they could play up top together at some stage, but no manager wanted to do that.

I can only assume that the Kuharevich mystery is something that has happened behind the scenes, because he didn't have the time on the pitch to warrant being shut out in the way he was. Did he fall out with all 3 managers or the non-playing side?

Whichever it was I don't see either Yates or Kuharevich having a future here and can't see us matching what Lowe could get elsewhere.

The issue is are we going to wait until we shift players on before getting the forwards we so badly need and risk those we've scouted going elsewhere or are we going to get players in and risk having players that aren't wanted on the wage bill?

With Levein holding the purse strings I suspect that it will be sell before we buy

He wasn't anything to write home about in one season with Watford and lasted 6 months at Reading.

However he was still highly regarded as a coach from his time at Chelsea and presumably he learnt a lot from his time as a manager at those clubs..

I think those other clubs developed him so that he was ready for us at that time, in the same way that we have developed Cooper and Martin for their next jobs.

Potter I don't think needed development as such, just exposure over here. I suspect Brighton had been watching his progress in Sweden before he joined us.

I also saw Frank Jr and thought he was living off his father's name and connections and was nothing special. Cooper had seen Gyokeres at age level but in our team he didn't look all that. Maybe a run of games would have been a different story.

Don't understand why anyone doesn't want me to scout for them.

Don't disagree. Burnley didn't have the players to play the way Kompany wanted to play in the top division. We didn't have the players to play the way Martin wanted to play in the championship.

If you have the resources of Man City you can pay to get the be players in, other teams have to cut their cloth according to their budget.

That's where our signings in the Martinez era were good, however we were looking at a type of player other clubs weren't- ahead of the times.

I think that you were a bit harsh and that he would benefit from a better balanced midfield. As would others. But is he playing to orders?

Probably could do with a rest from time to time but we don't have the quality in depth to do that if he is fit and ready to play.
