It really was a marvellously deft piece of skill - I note Kone's word for it in the entertaining video on the Offish was 'instinctive'. A perfick marriage of instinct and technique then. (I think Kolli came up with 'sublime'.) I've certainly been one who was starting to get a bit frustrated with him, incuding on the Cov match thread, so his goal and overall display really shoved my words down my throat. I'd say that was one of his best performances of the season, if not the best. He looked so much happier - and more threatening - positionally speaking, and I also thought his hold-up/link play and general involvement were notably enhanced. Clearly, a big issue for Richard is the, shall we say, variable quality of service he gets from Smyth and Dembele. JS needs to be hammering this on the training ground - hit Kone (not literally) from right, left, corners, free kicks, drop kicks . . . again and again and again. When Madsen looked up, executed a quality cross (albeit with far more time than Cov should have given him), that's what we get. More please. Can we have some more? Assuming he doesn't twang a hamstring in the vicinity of Ellerslie Road, he should aim for 15 goals this season, anything around which would be a really excellent return. Looking ahead, when Burrell finally comes back, we still have our original problem about how we set up up top, but we must - must - play to his now obvious strengths. |

There he is! I didn't even have to read your post to know you'd be there. It's a point now that I really worry you're mentally unwell - like having my own LfW stalker! |

But is the ref on Smyth's list as a bit of a c*nt? |

Three of Ian's four children are profoundly deaf - the statistics are stacked against it, apparently. Deafness is de(a)finitely classed as a disability in the UK, though some deaf people (and I guess non-deaf people) may regard it as a minority identity rather than an impairment. *Edit* - apologies for inadvertently reduplicating other posts in my first sentence. It was a fine win, but one excellent 90 min victory hardly erases 'the last three years', and not even some of the guff that has stunk the place out this season. The players and coach now need to show how much ambition JS claims he/they have, and prove themselves week after week. |

And also why Holloway was/is important for people like Jackett too, I'd suggest. |

Anger is an energy - haven't you heard? I know he's a manager, but why does everything have to be 'managed'? Passion is pain. Ergo, IH is often in pain. I hope his wife frequently puts her arm round him. |

And now potentially super-conscious, i.e. AI. Yikes! |

Can possession officially do one after yesterday's showing? We're not very good at keeping the ball, clearly, but finally to show some incisiveness in the final third truly warms the cockles. |

Even allowing for the 'Smyth factor', I think it would have been a soft pen. Much more outrageous was when their full back was wrestling him in the corner in the first half for what felt like an eternity, and then Sakamoto getting him in a headlock on the other side. Both of those were thick, thick yellows, but the ref, ridiculously and with embarrassing bias, saw nothing wrong. Even if he doesn't always help himself, I feel Smyth did well, in the circs, to keep his head and not clock someone. I would have kicked the official in the shins. [Post edited 1 Feb 21:52]

It's one of the things I really lament in the modern game: the lack of innovation from coaches/trainers. Dave Sexton was famous for this, e.g. going to watch Dutch teams at his own expense to help develop new free kick routines (though he was also working with talented originals like Venables and Bowles who had the skill and appetite to do things seemingly 'off the cuff' that were actually often carefully rehearsed). The point is, alluding to DS isn't merely 'nostalgic' (not that there's too much wrong with nostalgia) - it's about highlighting a kind of spirit of doing things that's all the more important as the game gets more 'professionalised', expectations get downward managed, and people get lazier, more scared, and stupider. I was thinking this week about what it has been that made me fall in love with QPR, and kept me in love, and for me it's been that maverick (often underdog) spirit: Stan, Stainrod, Wegerle, Byrne - and more recently the Terror Bat and Mr Eze. Morrissey is right here - 'diversity', in many ways, breeds conformity. I think we live in very conformist times. Is there anyone apart from us of late (though we haven't been playing it very well) who doesn't play 4-5-1 these days, for instance? Yawn! It's why the forces of groupthink - whether it's on a football message board or in a football club - have to be fought all the harder. Inertia (and its close cousin, corruption) are two of the major human problems. For Christ's sake, we're all in boxes of one kind or another, so try thinking outside them. I suppose what I'm saying is, at the end of the day and all things considered . . . You Rrrrrs! [Post edited 1 Feb 21:44]

A man after my own heart! Love the way he seems to have finished after a minute or two, then cranks himself up again. The reporter sounds like he's walking on eggshells, unsurprisingly. |

Fascinating to observe the one or two here who've done a volte face in recent months on Cook's capabilities. He'll be 35 in April. Richard Dunne did a sterling job for the club at a similar age, as did, in another era, Frank McLintock. I'd like to know how Steve might be feeling. If he genuinely believes he can carry on for another year after this one, the coaching staff agree, and the contract is sensible, I'd give it him right now, even if he's a squad player. |

Madsen and Kone were both really good today, as were Vale and (bar the marking for the goal) the whole back line. It really did feel like a professional and whole-hearted team performance from start to finish. I've also been critical of the manager, so credit to him too for his role in the tactical set-up. We now need to start showing this composure and creativity on the road again. Charlton is winnable, so let's go there and win. |

I hope they stitched him up in that case. [Post edited 31 Jan 18:13]

Delighted with that - for me, especially post-Wrexham, the best whole game performance of the season. Cov weren't much cop as it turned out, but we shut them out apart from one lapse, came from behind to score two fine goals, and finished professionally after the ludicrous 7 extra minutes. We deserved that - both the team and, most importantly, the fans. We'all enjoy that tonight, but after what's been a poor run, can we kick on from here now players are starting to come back?
