Found the John Byrne goal against Watford in the Milk cup the other day , which was my first ever away day , I cant believe that was 31 years ago
what struck me was the walk past the allotment and that Watford had square programmes even at a young age I thought what a sh1thole this is
I can just about recall Barron saving Barnes penalty and byrnes great finish
and that standing in the away end was brilliant, especially the daft lads jumping up and down with a QPR union Jack
anyone else recall their first away day ?

First game of the season. Clive Allen scored for us dragging us back from 2-0 down before Muhren scored a late 25 harder?
My first was autumn of 1982 Middlesbrough away. On the supporters club train met some fella who was mad about the band Blancmange who had the song Living On The Ceiling out at the time.
The station at 'Boro was a scary place and the escort from there to the ground was an eye opener as we got dogs abuse from their fans stood on the street along the route with a record shop In particular having some nasty gits outside ready to do us some damage.
Ground was tucked away amongst red bricked terraced houses and cobbled streets and we were stuck on a corner terrace next to their boys who stood on a terrace down the side of the ground. There was so much abuse going back and forth and being only 13 and going to the game on my own it was pretty scary for me.
The details of the game are typical QPR. We were top of the old division two and 'Boro had just appointed Malcolm Allinson which meant certain defeat for the Hoops. Clive Allen put us ahead and all seemed well but a quick brace of goals from the brilliantly named Heine Otto saw us lose 2-1.
The walk back to the station was not for the faint hearted and I seem to remember thinking to myself, even as a 13 year-old, we have no rivalry with this team, we lost and this is happening? What must it be like against big teams like Sunderland and Newcastle?
Anyway that started the love affair with away games and I loved the supporters club train trips meeting R's fans from all over the legendary Daphne and arriving back at a London terminus win or lose and pouring off the train with a throaty call of You R's.
Went back to Ayresome on one other occasion. It was the same day as the Miss World contest and a group of had a bet on the winner and I scooped the prize courtesy of Miss Iceland. It was another fruitless trip to the north east as we lost 1-0 to a Mark Brennan goal after Trevor Francis was fouled at the other end of the pitch.
Another thing from that match for those that remember the wonderful Joe Young was that he was staying in Newcastle for the weekend to watch the band Dinosaur Jr. He had seem them on the Friday and as was custom for Joe he looked liked he had such a good time that he couldn't have made it to bed the night before. He was a great story teller and regaled us with tales from the night before with many a sly dig at the locals.
Now I live in Oregon every R's game I make it to is an away game. Oh how I miss those days. | | | |
