Friend of mine knows Sam very well and why he played as defensive midfielder today is beyond both of us as he has always been an attacking midfielder. I thought he had a tidy if not startling game but should be playing further forward without doubt

Even in recruitment, Clement has to take some of the blame - as he is on the committee.

but actually I was more talking about his team selection and also his substitutions - not for the first time.

If Mesa needs time to acclimatise, then why didn't Sanches?

Mesa has been at the club all through pre-season and not up to speed. Sanches has been there since Thursday and is?

there was a lack of control and composure in midfield - Leon could have brought that. Mesa was on the bench and surely should have been used instead of bringing Bony on for a midfielder.

They can't create anything, what would Mesa have done ?, passed it 5 yards to Olsson or Naughton perhaps ?

A holding midfielder that went looking for the ball from our defenders would have freed up Carroll and Fer/Sanches to get further forward and link up play with the front men.

Clucas hid and pointed. Mesa could have done that. Leon would have done that.

They are 10 a penny, it's splitting hairs to say one sitting midfielder would be better than another, the problem is further up the pitch.

And after all that, Leon is still our best midfielder.

Probably because both Sanches and Abraham have guaranteed game time clauses in their loan agreements

His set-pieces aside, Cluas was excellent today.

If you can't see the difference between how Leon plays for us and the cowardly sht Clucas served up today I just don't know.

In the first half he did ok. Why are you expecting him to play like Leon as he wasn't brought in for that role.

The job of our holding midfielder isn't to stand still and point while the 10 other players play the game around him. He was hiding today while Mawson and Fernandez were having to carry the ball out, and Carroll was dropping deep to collect it.

I don't care if "he wasn't brought in for that role" he did an awful, cowardly job of it. Leon will be back in this side sooner rather than later because he's got the guts to want the ball.

Clucas was the pick of our midfield, that's not saying much mind you as Carroll, Sanches and Fer were complete gash.

Pretty much any tidy forwards ball, including the peach of a through ball that Abraham should have buried came from Fer, but apparently he was shit.

OK.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

different players, why Clucas is being asked to sit in the base of the diamond is beyond me, he is an attacking midfielder FFS. Its like sticking Bony out wide and then he gets slagged off for not performing ?

Play players in the roles they were bought for. That DM position should be Mesas, why is he still not being played there. If Clucas then moves into a more offensive position, we will get more benefit

I thought Clucas and Carroll were terrible, Sanches got on the ball and tried, Fer was the best of a poor bunch.

Clucas played a role thats not his first choice, he was tidy if not spectacular at all. I thought carroll was a bit anonymous throughout, regardless of his great corners. I just feel that the midfield is playing too cautiously, i can't really remember the last time one of our midfielders scored from outside the box.

Pace seems to be an issue too, we seem to get to the final third then energy just seems to go and everything gets a bit static. Could see sanches' frustration growing on the odd occasion he found space around their box, and there was no option apart from either trying to wonder pass, which never materialised, or passing backwards.
