A Rochdale Team 21:35 - Aug 21 with 11234 viewsmikehunt

And, whilst we are waiting to crack open the champagne, here's one I don't think we have had before - is it possible to name a full team of players actually born in Rochdale? I wouldn't know where to start.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

I think you mean Bob Finc. Paul Crossley was a Rochdale lad who played for the Dale before being sold to Preston.

Yeah Rob/Bob Finc surely he's the same person?!

Tim Bobbin were a Sunday league team and Cassy Gabs Saturday, although I’m not so sure he played at Gabs

From Steven Phillipps' books:

Career: Matthew Moss, Dale am 1970, pro 16.7.72 [12+2/-], St Gabriels cs.74, {Barrow 1975-76?}

Barry was an amateur defender in Dale’s reserves after leaving school, signing pro in the summer of 1972. He was on the bench a few times before making his debut as a defensive midfielder in a line-up that already included three other centre backs, Blant, Kinsella and Marsh, for a match against Chesterfield which was televised on ITV. He played a number of games at full back the following term.

NEIL MILLS

Born: Littleborough 27.10.63
Forward
FL Apps/Gls 4+6/0 Total Apps/Gls 11+6/2
Career: Tim Bobbin c.1981, Joinery 1982-83, Tim Bobbin 1983 (Sunday League), Dale am 1983-84, Tim Bobbin, Dale 8.86 [4+6/-], Stockport Co. 8.87[5+2/-], Castleton Gabriels, Mossley 12.87, Horwich RMI, Milton 1989, Glossop, Castleton Gabriels 1991-92, assistant manager 1993-94 to 10.94 (+ Tim Bobbin 1988, Wheatsheaf 1988 to 1991, Dicken Green 1992, (Salford 1993), St Johns Tavern 1995-96, Industry 1997-98, Top House 1998, Rochdalians 1999; Sunday League)
Honours: Lancashire Sunday Cup 1988, Rochdale Sunday League youth XI 1980, senior XI 1982 to 1985, 1995-96

A late comer to the professional game, Neil was well known in local football around Rochdale, particularly with top Sunday League side Tim Bobbin. He had a few games in the reserves in 1983-84 but finally signed up with Dale in 1986, when chairman Tommy Cannon reportedly demanded that manager Halom sign some ‘cheaper’ players. Neil started all the pre-season Lancashire Cup games and was in and around the squad for the first half of the season, scoring in both the League Cup (against Burnley) and the FA Cup. He also made a few senior appearances for Stockport before stints with Castleton Gabriels and with various Rochdale Sunday League sides, winning the man of the match award when Tim Bobbin claimed the Lancashire Sunday Cup in 1988.

David Buchanan.

Wasn't there a lad at QPR (O'Connor?) a few years ago who was born in Rochdale?

Going back a bit further I used to work in Newgate House many years ago with Walter Birch who I'm sure was a genuine Rochdalian.

My dad used to tell me about an allround sportsman called Walter Jones who not only played for Dale, Hornets and Rochdale Cricket Club but also captained all three!
In later life he also played for Rochdale Bowling Club.

Walter Birch was born in Ecclesfield, Sheffield.

Walter Jones was a Rochdalian, but only made two first team appearances

Andy Mandzuk (not sure if he played in the first team)
Kenny Williams may have made 1 appearance, both players round about 1970ish.

I played for torchbearers with Keny for about 3 sesaons but knew him for much longer he was a north east lad. I was very sad to find this piece about himhim https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/news/local/north-east-footballers-take-part-

I think that Torchbearers had a Salvation Army connection and were financially backed by Chalkers because of that.

Or do you mean the bloke from Carry On films?
