Burning Bright - Preview on 16:50 - Jan 20 by CliveWilsonSaid

Well Lee Hoos came with plenty of experience and don't forget we also have Chris Ramsey as Technical Director. So perhaps this allowed for a "less experienced" person in the DOF role?

I don't think so Clive, not when you're making the entire club philosophy and model about having a DoF to oversee the football side of the club, it's too important a job.

It is a very fair point, though.

IIRC Ferdinand arrived as a highly qualified DoF with no experience which was noted by us as a fan group. He is experienced now though and two thoughts occurred recently when trying to analyse his position:

1) His performance with us has seen him linked twice with England roles, and
2) Notwithstanding the above, could his experience/performance be replaced if he left?

I'm not sure previous experience is tantamount to success necessarily, there's others doing seemingly good work elsewhere as first time DOF's - 'our own' Steve Gallen for example.

The issue for me is that with years of experience in the role now, Ferdinand should be at a point where he takes responsibility for success or failures, but nobody knows what he should be judged on. Is it managerial appointments? Recruitment? Implementing a philosophy and play style? Overseeing coach and scouting operations? All of them?

Personally with QPR prone to self sabotage and general fck ups I'd like us to properly define the DOF role and take power/decisions away from managers, fans and even ownership and put it in the hands of Les and his specialist appointments. Then if things are not working and too many mistakes are made, you can judge him (and others) on executing their remits correctly. The current set up is clear as mud.

No that's fair enough.

I was just looking at examples at other clubs and lots of them seem to have a Technical Director, a Sporting Director or a DoF. As far as I can tell not many clubs have both but I could be wrong.

Also when you look at clubs in the championship. How many clubs are there that we would like to copy? Not many IMO. Norwich, Bournemouth and the Kew lego lot maybe. Swansea are doing ok at present but they've had their fair share of turmoil recently. Bristol City similar.

Let's not make the mistake of thinking QPR are a normal football club. It's been an absolute madhouse for 25 years or more. It still is in some ways but arguably the last 4/5 years has been our most stable in that time. Far from successful on the pitch and not very exciting for us fans but some of the problems from previous years have been addressed. We've developed the vaccine and had our first jab. Second jab in a few weeks. Mid-table Championshp here we come!

Anyway this is way above my pay grade. Where's that Indie music thread...

I agree with all of that, Simmo. I'd like it to be clearer. Much clearer.

While I like collegiate working and co-operation, there should also be clear lines of responsibility.

For instance, if anyone ever told me that we should all work with the new colleague, my replay was always "Of course, but just so we know - if s/he makes a mistake is it their fault or mine?". If the answer was "mine", then I'd work with them, but they and I knew that ultimately they worked for me.
