I loved driving around the Kruger Park for 5 days in 2006/7.

4 different ecology zones in one day, from a dead zone to teeming forests.

My mate nearly killed a giraffe too as it stepped out just as she was showing me something on the dashboard.

Large dead birds in trees cocooned in spiderwebs makes you wonder...how big is the f'kin spider!

I guess a cruise around the Falklands and Antarctica doesn’t come cheap? What was rough cost of a trip there?

It can be anything from around £10k to £30k+ per person for circa 3 wks depending on the time of year and which ship you go on. However, if you are 'time rich' and don't mind taking a chance hanging around is Ushuai for a bit then you can get 3 weeks for under £5k with a bit of skilled negotiation and a bit of luck. If you take a shorter cruise (say biff off South Georgia or Falklands) then of course the costs drop below the aforesaid.

There could be some proper bargains to be had in the current circumstances if and when the cruises are up and running again

Safari 100%. Just to get up close to some of the most amazing animals on the planet is a tremendous buzz. Just don't make the mistake I did of going to a private game reserve. The animals are just as amazing but as they are brought in, you don't see as much of a variety or as many.

Don't get the cruising thing tbh. If I want to catch norovirus, I'll just lick the floor in McDonalds and save myself a few grand.

Depends on which Reserve you go to - I'm told that some of the public reserves are a bit like 'Disneyland without the organisation'.

Meanwhile, my g/f and I were on a self-drive holiday in the Cape Province of South Africa a few years back, just booking our itinerary 2 or 3 days ahead as we went along.
We mentioned to one guest house owner that we were interested in a safari and she recommended https://www.amakhala.co.za/

She phoned them to see whether they had a vacancy and although the Reserve had just closed for the season, the owners of one property agreed to take us, at a reduced rate (a bonus for them).

Anyhow, when we got there, we realised that the Reserve was actually a co-operative, run by 6 or 7 private neighbouring farms round a big river valley. They realised that farming wasn't really producing a return, so had decided to re-wild it and run it as a reserve. They offer a wide variety of accommodation and budgets, from 5 Star De Luxe to Camping.

Every year apparently the whole valley was returning to nature and iirc they already had all of The Big Five (although we didn't see any Leopards), plus bags of other amazing animals. They were due to reintroduce some hippo's, which I think have since arrived.

We stayed in the Woodbury Lodge, then run by Ivor(?) and his wife - they were fabulous hosts, couldn't do enough, meaning our stay with them was the highlight of a great holiday.

I guess the moral of the story for the OP is Do Your Homework Thoroughly before you book- ideally with local knowledge.
