Ethan Laird on 21:51 - Aug 20 with 2394 views | Catullus | It'll certainly be interesting when Roberts is fit. Laird looks more skilfull and when he settles in properly, with all the team up to speed he could be a real threat.

I was watching him closely tonight and when he hits his stride he has the action of a track athlete. He’s going to be a real handful for us. Brilliant signing, fair play.

Ethan Laird on 22:00 - Aug 20 with 2326 views | jasper_T | I just wanted him to knock it past and go down the line more often. Apart from one great run kept stopping and cutting infield onto his weaker foot (and winning free kicks). Give him a few games to realise how easy it can be for him at this level, maybe. Once he knows he has the pace and there's going to be a couple in the box to hit he might rival Connor's creative contribution last season.

Absolutely he was. I’ve heard he has gone to A&E to remove the Bristol city left back from his pocket! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ethan Laird on 22:07 - Aug 20 with 2265 views | KeithHaynes | I thought he was very negative, going forwards he had far too much initiative, looking for the right pass and not passing back is not what I want to see. I want passing back and looking to defend a 1-0 loss.

I think the stops were made as he was afraid of making a mistake. Once his confidence grew he was a revelation. If he backs his pace and knocks the ball ahead to chase it he will be a monster for us.

Ethan Laird on 00:35 - Aug 21 with 1949 views | Jack123 | Like I said in the matchday thread, It was like he didn't want to make any mistakes, did not want to take any chances? in the first half, but when he had a go he was exceptional.

Ethan Laird on 02:23 - Aug 21 with 1866 views | DwightYorkeSuperstar | Let's hope he can do the same when playing left back. Bidwell was appalling. How he failed to create a single chance considering the positions he was played into is staggering.

Agreed, Catallus. As I said before we signed him Laird’s pace and skills on the ball would add a different dimension to our XI, and he certainly showed that in the second half. The kid is a stud and he’s going to be knocking on Wan-Bissaka’s door if he can keep it up with us this season. It becomes clearer to see the patterns of attacking play that Martin’s system employs when there is a player like Laird receiving the ball out wide, someone who can use his pace and skills to take on defenders and open the defence up through the middle. One-twos and quick passes through the middle are much more threatening when there is someone on the outside who can advance the ball and open up pockets in the final third. He’s going to have a big part to play this season, and Walsh will make him look even better. As a young player he’ll go through his ups and downs, but hopefully we can keep Roberts and we’ll be well stocked for competition at full strength. He can play on the left, so I think that’s where he’ll up more often than not when Roberts gets back. Connor is too good of a footballer to leave out for Bidwell and I hope we can tie him down to a new deal this season. Make Connor captain if/when Grimes leaves, he actually gets into our players when needed and is always in the opposition’s face defending himself and his teammates. He’s smart about it too, never seen a red with us.
