Child poverty 2 child benefit cap abolished
at 16:06 4 Dec 2025

The £70k is possible but would need a set of really specific needs such as:

1. Exemption from the Benefit Cap: At least one adult or child receives a high-rate disability benefit (PIP/DLA).

2. High Need for Disability Benefits: Multiple family members (e.g., both parents and a child) receiving the highest rates of disability benefits (PIP/DLA).

3. Extremely High Housing Costs: The family lives in a very high-rent area, such as Central London, where the Housing Element of Universal Credit would be very high.

As I said, entirely possible but an exception.

I'd like to know how much the development of the club is bringing in.

It's a bit like the conversations we have about the airport, we know how much is going out but we need to know whats coming in to get a full picture,

How much?!
at 20:49 3 Dec 2025

Just bought 4 first class stamps (first time since goodness knows when) and it was £6.80! Or £1.70 each!

When on earth did this happen?

I’m not as ‘experienced’ as some the illustrious posters on here, but I can remember them being 18p in the late 80s

Out of curiosity, I looked that the Bank of England inflation calculator and if stamps had kept pace with inflation, it would bow cost 47p

How can Scotland afford this?
at 13:45 1 Dec 2025

This is a bit different as essentially it's the Scotish government adding 10% to the teaching bill - it'll be a vast amount of money on top of what they're paying for free precriptions and for Scottish children going to unviversity.

I'd love to know how they're managing to fund it.

It's the addional cover that's the cost WR as it's 10% more no-contact time that England and Wales.

Forget whether you agree with it on not, how are they funding it along with free prescriptions and free university tuition?

This is precisely the arguments that need to be made.

Both sides are obsessed with the extremes.

Stories about singles parents with 5 children are exceptions yet make people very angry.

For me, the examples AJ gives get me far more cross, because they’re the most common examples and cost the most money.

I guess everyone should just stay in and be afraid then 🤷🏻

A fine success of the media to make everyone feel so scared.

Obviously data won’t convince some so that’s me done. Might pop to London tomorrow 😉

Violent crime is.

The facts here are violent crime has decreased yet the fear of crime has increased.

Both can be (and are) right.

Here’s some of the London specific data:

No doubt this will be dismissed because of the fear of crime, which is amplified by social media for clicks and political purposes.

A little light observation 🤣

Another (possible) reason house prices are the key to so many improvements.

A metropolis of 7 odd million people is going to have areas that are dangerous.

The ‘fear’ is something that’s holding us back in some areas.

If we’re saying London isn’t safe until every borough is then we’ll be waiting a long time.

People are going to have different experiences and different takes.

If have no doubt what WR said is accurate.

I spend quite a lot of time in London and feel very safe.

There have always been dodgy places.

Mind you, it may well have something to do with young people not having a culture of going out as much in general.

No more than I’d have been 10 years ago.

Substack is a cracking platform for long reads. There’s only one I subscribe and pay for and that’s the one by Sam and Lawrence Freedman - excellent stuff.

As for the OP I reckon it’s because bad news trumps good news so is amplified.

We keep hearing how dodgy and rubbish our current politicians are but I have a hunch that they’ve always been thus and we just know more about them.

We've also got the gap between rich and poor workers.

I've no idea how we solve that tbh.

It seems to all rely on the good will of the wealthy as we're told if we tax them they'll move away.

The woman who leads BET365 took home hundreds of millions last year but she very quietly paid all her tax in Britain. We need more of that.

In regards to striving making work pay (and I know this will really annoy some on here but here goes..).

In 2008 the starting salary for a teacher was £20,627 - 85% higher than the minimum wage. With yesterdays rise, the gap has shrunk to 33%.

Of course there's the bonus of pension contributions but there's also tens of thousands of pounds of debt accrued through gaining the necessary degree.

I'm sure there are loads of stories around wage stagnation - it's just this is the one I know the figures for,
