Yes I was correct - Select Group 2 to give them their proper title - could be 2A (National League Ref) or 2B (National League North or South Ref).

Basically 2 or 3 levels below the top level.

I do not know how QPR arrange their officials for friendly matches (which is what this match was) but I know that Brentford arrange refereeing officials via a friend of mine who was a Football League referee many years ago and he has a few qualified refs(not football league refs) who he offers the matches to depending on their availability. They get paid a 'few quid' for officiating the matches.

Ever since the infamous "friendly" with that Chinese team, officials have to come from the appropriate level - as decided by the FA - for friendly matches involving professional clubs.

The 'top' club is used as the level.

Which is why there are always PL refs for PL teams in the FA Cup, even if they are playing League 2 teams.

IIRC the ref for that Chinese game was Dermot Gallagher.
