What happened in Venezuela wasn't a failure of socialism at all. It did very well under Chavez - ok, not everything was great, crime was high, but that's similar in most western countries, probably higher than in most communist countries. Cuba has the lowest crime rate in the Caribbean.
The so called revolution in Venezuela, wasn't a working class uprising of those unhappy with the regime, it was instigated by the middle classes, big corporations and American influence. The Govt at the time, had the support of the people, and most significantly for south America, the support of the army.
As with most left wing countries, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia etc, they face sanctions from the west, that prevents investment into their industries and infrastructures. The Soviet Union didn't collapse because of the arms race or Re gens policy, but because it couldn't get outside investment into it's gas and oil industry. It makes a nice story that Reagan won the cold war, but a story is all it is. | | | |

Thames Water is one such example, performance is appalling and the company is potentially in danger of going bust after being saddled with £14bn of debt. Our railways are in a terrible state too. I’m not saying privatisation is bad or good nor am I saying nationalisation is great, far more importantly is the way the businesses are run.
With the right people in charge and good regulatory oversight businesses can thrive whether they are in private hands or nationalised. | | | |
