I've probably had to explain something or be informed that a certain term or saying is 'quaint, unusual, or simply something from a Dickens novel, every couple of months I've lived in this country.
I've had two in the last couple of days
A/ Early doors (huh?).
B/ Mustn't grumble (quaint).

I've had to explain this a dozen times to American construction guys. A term not used in (this part of) the States, similarly built properties (few and far between), are known as a duplex. |

Have fairly often read in American books a reference to "duplex" houses and never had a scooby what one was.

Generally, a duplex property is owned by one person / family, who rent out the other side. The exception is usually found in expensive inner city areas, where the value of the units are such that the homeowner has legally separated the parts and sold off one side.
