100% what I’ve said above. Last night was way too cautious. We need a happy medium between that and too kamikaze

| Swansea City v Derby County : Match day thread on 01:14 - Nov 26 by Landore_Jack | I want to know what Joey and Leon were thinking with that starting eleven. Will this manager be allowed to bring in his own coaches? |
Joey and Leon were thinking that teams develop over time so players get used to playing together, developinf understandings etc. They picked a team which had 8 players who had regurlarly started together least season and who contributed to that end of season run. They added Fulton to provide some much needed experience in the middle of the.park. The " new " Players were omitted purely because Leon and Joey were looking to play settled side players who have been experienced at this level. Its all about confidence and the pkayers are short of this. Joey abd Leon are short term appointments Matos is waiting for his own backroom staff to join him...I guess they are waiting on permits and visas.

| Swansea City v Derby County : Match day thread on 17:47 - Nov 26 with 943 views | RichardO | Think Matos saw the main elements that have been our problems for some time trying to consistently play down the flanks on the floor trying change the point of attack but doing it just too slow on the right and on the left we had more movement and pace and interplay but inevitable the only way to get decent dangerous crosses in is to get the left footed Tymon beyond their back line which leaves such an exploitable gap on our left side. End of last season that gap was plugged more often than not by the aware O'Brien until we tried to use him playing further up front which meant gaps once again appeared. Last season and the end of the one before Cabango oftened bypassed Key to get the ball quickly forward be it in the channels, over the top behind defenders or quickly to feet, this season to see two players Key and Ronald who seem have to no awareness of what the other is going to do is pitiful, be it in attack or defence. Ronald had been asked to chase down the ball to try and put intense pressure on the player on the ball but once he had force their fullback to pass back into the middle he needed to let the midfielders in the middle of the park apply the pressure or expect the defence to step up in this case Key who instead ended up in no man's land and ineffective. To see the ball stalling down our right until we need to attack and then we commit to getting forward but we throw caution to the wind over committing we often get back into games but we cannot seem to fathom the fact the opposition is going to react and we have to snuff out any attempt for the opposition to get back into a game by keeping a viable threat up top while being defensively solid but not dropping so deep that we give teams every opportunity to get back into the game.. Teams are bidding their time until we lose our shape. | | | |

The midfield press you refer to which what should have happened was something Derby did incredibly well giving Cabango and Tymon little to no time on the ball. It resulted in them making mistakes or hurrying the pass. The whole point of this playing out from the back and across the back is to pull the opposition midfield out of shape thus exploiting the gap left by them. We just don’t seem to be able to do that though.

Galbraith needs support, he's doing to much on his own I don't think Franco can do that supporting roll, we need to move the ball quicker and players need to move how many passes did we make in and around the halfway last night, Derby just sat back and crowded us out and we made their job easier by us being pedestrian. Matos got a hell of a job on his hands with this squad.

On the whole we press pretty well ourselves in the first twenty minutes we played some nice football and we beat their press getting higher up the park while not leaving ourselves exposed, as we tried to force the game we lost our shape and by shape I mean opposition players were left unmarked giving the man on the ball the easy options our movement gave us options in that first twenty minutes but I really think once a team stifles our flanking plan then options through the midfield should be used but that means the fullback hold their defensive position aand the midfield provide the forward momentum or the other option is to bring the wingers in tighter to the centre forward to support his aerial challenge as we change things up also leaving space for fullbacks to come onto. All about movement of players but not being dragged about to suit the opposition so we leave players unmarked able to become a danger to us. Marking has to be tighter incase we lose the ball | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What is the point of pressing if we fall apart as soon as we reach opponents box We have players who cannot tackle , pass, and seem reluctant to shoot

Galbraith, Eon, Vipotnik, Cullen and Franco seem happy to shoot if they get space.

Is the cannot tackle, pass and unwilling to shoot the problem I rather think the problem is not getting the press right or not being in position to close players down properly which is otherwise known as marking, done with anticipation of what both the opposition and our own players are going to do. Reading where the ball is most likely to be after challenges and supporting those challenges? You could question different elements of people's abilities but teams setup and stability is paramount which we have lacked in the middle of the park.

Maybe, but because we as a team are too slow getting to that area of the pitch there is usually a wall of well position defenders ready to block the shot. One thing I’ve noticed is when we pass the ball into midfield the receiver is facing our own goal. The immediate inclination is to pass the ball back rather than to turn and run into the space behind. All the while the opposition defence is getting set up. Turn, drive, get the wings running off the ball to run onto the ball at pace and not receive in a static state. Our wingers can’t beat their markers 9/10 times but if they can run onto a moving ball they’ve got the pace.

Well, thanks for a decent reply . You're a special contributor. Your analysis is correct IMO and I stand by my comments The fundamental essence of any sports team is not to be beaten easily. We make mediocre teams look special and they are not Derby were not in any way special

We have players up top who can cause teams problems but the midfield isn't working properly but I will qualify that with the fact we have fullbacks who have been asked to support the attack with by the midfield to cover but it seems as if that midfield is not operating as a cohesive unit I like to two defensive mind midfielders but ones who can still press up but have the wherewithal to read the game to keep us defensively sound will our fullbacks press on, the third feeding of the centre forward and wingers. With three forwards one advanced midfielder and two midfielders ready to intercept clearances high up the pitch that is 6 players pressing forward then add two full backs pressing on that is 8 players and pure folly, the fullbacks and defensive midfielders need to know who is pressing forward and who is defending and by that I mean marking tightly to ensure pressure is maintained. We don't and it will be something Matos needs to sort out

Our midfield needs to be more fluid , Stamenic and Cullen are far too static ,it looks like they’re almost hiding behind opponents like they don’t want the ball , midfielders have to be creating space to make themselves available to take the ball It probably doesn’t help that we faff about at the back ,slowing the game down giving opponents time to mark our players up making it hard for our midfielders to make this space but they can’t stand around like statues Galbraith , Franco and Widell when he’s been on do try to turn and play forward at every opportunity but sometimes end up being crowded out If we played out from the back quicker the spaces would be easier to find and on occasion we’ve done that to good effect I’m sure when Matos gets his coaching team in things will change and we will have a clearer picture of the way he wants us to play
