What Constitutes a Sport 09:25 - Dec 3 with 234 viewsHytheFerrytales

Making a segue from the Formula1 thread I revisited the old debate on what is or isn't a sport. Early thoughts include..

Cooper's Hill annual cheese rolling competition..DEFINITELY a sport,,bodies on the line, multiple concussions and fractures provides a true gladiatoral spectacle.

World Conker Championships..DEFINITELY a sport..inclusive entry criteria, high skills and sportsmanship in the true Olympian spirit.

London Marathon..NO WAY A SPORT...As far as I can tell that is just 50,000 masochists forlornly chasing 4 or 5 very rapid Kenyans through East London on a Sunday morning.

The sport or not question, I always use slippers as the decider, if you can play a ‘sport’ in slippers then it ain’t a real sport.
Examples of sports that you can’t wear slippers.
Football
Rugby
Swimming
Examples of ‘sports’ you could play in slippers.
Tennis
Athletics
Darts

I don’t think it’s a sport unless you get out of breath or if something else (like a horse or a car) is doing most of the work.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.
