RIP Gerry Dawson 15:49 - May 12 with 3203 viewsTVOS1907

Sad news that Dale fan and matchday commissionaire Gerry Dawson has died today.

Any fans who used to go into the reception/main stand area at home matches will know Gerry as one of the chaps at the bottom of the stairs.

A real stalwart who could always be guaranteed to be there every game and with a welcoming smile and handshake for everyone, especially directors and guests from visiting clubs.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

RIP Gerry. Terrible news.

I've known him for over 20 years and never heard him utter one cross word ever.

He was one of the warmest, mild, friendliest gentleman you could ever wish to meet - polite, funny and charming.

My thoughts are with his nearest and dearest who must be devastated.

Big loss to the club. Our loss is most certainly Pearly Gates' gain! He'll be up there now telling St. Peter all about Dale!

I met and saw this man a lot, he was absolutely wonderful.
Always had a smile to spare you, no matter who you were.
New nearly every fan who walked through the door, made you smile to see the warmth he gave.

It's very sad news to hear he has passed away.
Thoughts and prays certainly go out to his family.
I have no doubt he'll be sorely missed.

I had known Gerry for God knows how many years, We played football together for different teams in Rochdale. We even worked together at the old Alderglen on Spotland road for a time. To say it has come as a shock is an understatement. He was a bloody good bloke, and an even better mate.

RIP Gerry, it was a privilege to know you.

Awful news. Up and down the country, people at various football clubs ask about Gerry. Never a bad word to say to/about anybody.

Will be sadly missed by all who had any contact with him.

Warm and friendly especially with the kids. He was our Goldbond agent and when he finished he never forgot you. Nobody better as a meet and greet person at our main entrance. A big loss to our club.

Jesus saves but Beasley scores off the rebound.

I first met Gerry in 1983 and was one of his supervisors at Transcare. A real character in those days and always the first to make a sarchy comment and give an opinion but always with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek!

Didnt see him for years but in the past few seasons have seen him briefly for a chat in his 'ambassador' role and nobody was more fitting as the face of the club as you walked through the main entrance.

Incredibly sad news and a Man who opitimised everything good about our club. God Bless.

I've didn't have the pleasure of knowing Gerry personally, but it sounds like he's one of those stalwarts that make Rochdale FC the club - our club - that we know and love

Amid all the negativity, hysteria and premature anger about "retained lists" - what the hell does that really matter?

And, isn't it just possible that those close to the club were more concerned about his condition than making sure we had our fix? Not saying that's why there was any delay, or any unco-ordinated response by the club concerning JC's statement, but it certainly puts the whole episode into perspective

Oh Dear. Great friend. Even kept smiling in Cronky Club when the price of ale had gone up years ago. Remember standing in the Sandy with him on Jonah's debut and how he let Jonah know in no uncertain way what his weaknesses were and how his positional play might be improved. 'You're supposed to be playing down the right wing son and there's acres down this corner of the pitch which you haven't visited as yet.'

Very sad to read this, lovely fella.

Going back to one of the earlier posts I'd reckon that he's nudged St. Peter out and Gerry is now checking tickets at the Pearly Gates to carry on upstairs!

You're right. God will have put St. Peter in the reserves and Gerry will be on the door now!

I can just see Gerry telling St Peter how we needed Jesus to help save us this year, and St. Peter replied "Aye, and he'd have still needed his Dad's help!"

Gerry was a top man and looked after me when I was a youngster, I'll always remember him calling me over from the press box after the game or halftime, when my dad was working and I'd stand with him and talk to him about any subject. He watched me grow up an was part of my match day experience. He was always smiling and was part of the fabric of the club. He was a true gent and be sorely missed.

R.I.P
