Just back. 19:04 - Dec 26 with 4074 views | ted_hendrix | I'm gutted and fear the worst more than ever now, like It or not we have been 'doubled' by WBA who were (like It or not) the Prem team whereas we looked like an upper Championship team. Yes RG was fouled by being backed into and yes we should have had a pen but that's got fck all to do with the fact that we are just not good enough. Chris Brunt's goal was what he has been doing for bloody donkey years, you could smell and see It coming. We never learn,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Just back. on 17:42 - Dec 27 by wood_hoop | Neil, you have a good insight into the game and your post is fairly accurate.. 'But what it shows, and what was masked under Mark Hughes, is where we are short and do not have enough quality. It was a poor performance, but all it does is highlight where our problems are and we'll see if Redknapp can do anything about it in the transfer window'. The depth of quality is the major problem and I have serious doubts even the reputation of Mr HR and his wheeler dealing can solve such a glaring problem. Just how many players will it need to give us half a chance ? How much is in the 'war chest' that HR may be given ? Our current crop of players will need more than just the odd new player to help the cause, virtually having to rebuild attitudes & skill levels in such a short space of time may just be too much for HR. |
Gosh, it's hard to know what to do, we've put ourselves in such an awkward situation with what we've done to the club over the past 12 months. But the board need to overhaul their strategy because there are deep rooted issues that will take more than just one transfer window to solve and I'm not confident they will do it properly because since they've been here, they've adopted a *survival at all costs* attitude. That means they have to adopt a strategy and risk assessment that does accept the possibility of relegation. If they do that, only then is than an opportunity of change for the better and a foundation for better practices and policies. I would rebuild the squad properly and immediately look to offload the high earners, either on permanent deals or on loan. This would be done with a view to introducing a tiered salary structure at the club that's more sensible and one that doesn't create such massive divisions between players in the same squad. Equality is important as otherwise you create a situation where there is resentment between them, especially if the high earners are lacking motivation and not pulling their weight. We need a tiered salary structure that players understand and that structure should remain in place until the club is ready to increase it. The pay levels should be reflective of age, experience, ability and potential, with a maximum we're prepared to pay any individual in each of those categories as we define them. This will allow us to not only attract the right type of player, who's not just in it for the money, but allow us to move players on more easily when we decide they are no longer part of our long term plans. I'd also introduce a one-year only deal for players 32 and over, which is a sound and sensible practice to employ and stop handing out long contracts to ageing players that will essentially leave you stuck with them. In our current form, we should be seen as a club that is a good stepping stone for players to showcase their skills for bigger clubs to buy and we should remain that way until we are ready to no longer be a "selling club". We also need to start thinking about under 21 players a little more seriously. We need a higher calibre under this bracket that do not impact on the 25 man squad, which would allow us some breathing space in the event we run into trouble with injuries and suspensions. There are not many we can turn to right now because we haven't really got any who are ready or capable of stepping in without harming their progress. Max Ehmer is the only one who is probably worth a look if we have to. There was talk of European places at the start of the season, but because we have had such a poor strategy for so long and such a high turnover of players, we'd struggle to fulfil some of the European squad registration rules that require a certain number of players to have trained at the club for 3 years or more. This starts with the youth programme, so that practice should be preached continuously and as part of a wider and long term ambition of getting there one day and being prepared for it. If we managed to move on some of the high earners, then there are plenty of good Championship players that would benefit from half a season of Premier League experience. That would serve them and us well whatever the division we were in the following campaign. If we went down, it would be a natural part of their development and hopefully be a platform for an instant return to the Premier League. If we stayed up, it would be shrewd business and they'd be able to kick on from there. On top of this strategy I would compliment it with the loan market, but we can only take in one more player from the Premier League as we already have Fabio. I think Jermaine Pennant would be a reasonable shout and whose experience and style of play might be of use to us, but further afield, that's why the likes of Robbie Keane from abroad do appeal, as he knows the league and could be a useful addition. The main problem I see is we lack a leader in a key position on the pitch who is in his prime, and finding one of those isn't going to be easy unless Harry Redknapp can call in a favour or two from somewhere. Sometimes it just takes one or two players who are really up for it to make everything click, and that's what we've got to hope and pray for, whatever we end up doing between now and the end. Performance wise, it's got to be straightforward, easy to pick up and no frills. That's the best chance of success. Get in players who can play a bog standard style of getting the ball wide, getting it into the box and getting players on the end of things. Attack is the best form of defence, so I'd lean this way because we need to win games, and if you win games and confidence raises, and you get your fans behind you, it encourages the team to work that bit harder for each other defensively in order to get results. It's definitely a problem, but there are potential possibilities that we can and should explore to help our situation. If we can convince clubs from China, Qatar or Russia to take some of the players either permanently or on loan, then that may be a potential route. Djibril Cissé, Esetban Granero, Ji-Sung Park and Julio Cesar could all be able to be moved on, albeit at potential losses for us either in transfer fees or subsidising on salary if we really have to. You would hope we could move on José Boswingwa and one or two others in a similar category as well, but time will tell on that. This is where those countries I mentioned might come in to help save the day, but we do have to accept we might get stuck with them as well. Even if a club paid half of any of these players' wages, that's a substantial amount that could be enough to attract the kind of players I've mentioned. The Championship players are not earning huge amounts and some of them may be tempted by the opportunity of Premier League football at the same time. Realistically we may have to consider offers for some players that we don't want to leave as well, if that needs to happen, then it needs to happen.

I agree. It looks tough to manage but HR should have a good idea of who he doesn't need by now and we need to look proactively at reducing the wage bill. We're in a mess, but the best way out is to think a bit more long term.

fabio and Dyer / Traore How do you think the scum play with cole or man u with Evra. Have the left and right backs pushing up and have Derry as a defensive midfielder to cover, that would give us 5 across the middle going forward with SD playing between defence and midfield. To be fair with the 2 i would play up front you don't need wingers getting to the line and crossing the ball for 2 forwards who will win the ball in the air.

Easy innit. Football is and has always been a simple game. M'bia is an obvious natural leader.
