Ok. Fellow geeks i need your help.
Today I've set this up using a pi, an sd card etc. all this was done using an Ethernet cable. I also bought a USB wifi dongle

The remote on my phone works when the Ethernet is in. Take the Ethernet out and try to run using wifi, nothing. No xbmc or remote.
I plugged the USB into the laptop earlier to configure it etc and it says it's working fine. When it's in the pi it's flashing blue like it's working but nothing.

You need to give your Pi what is known as a static IP address, but first you must decide on whether you are going to be connecting wirelessly or via the ethernet cable.
FWIW, it is always best to connect via ethernet, since devices connecting to the Pi should then receive the best, most stable service.
Once that is done you need to go into your router's set up program, read what is known as the MAC address for the PI's network interface (wireless or wired) and hard wire it so that each time the router detects that connection it gives it a static - read the same - IP address.
