Politics aside, I went to watch Rayo Vallecano about 15 years ago and loved it. The metro stop is literally on the corner of the ground, there are bars across the road, the atmosphere was great in a half-empty stadium, and anyone under 15 was blatantly only there because their parents/grandparents had forced them to go. Rubbish game, but great atmosphere. There’s a block of flats behind one goal, from which an elderly woman apparently has been known to throw spuds at the away keeper. They would definitely be my team if I lived in Madrid.

Par for the modern course I suppose but thought the lack of rigour in The Athletic's puff piece ushering him in was particularly dismal. Journo Super League confirmed.

Went there a few seasons back when there were in the Primera league and what an experience.A group of us got there early and enjoyed the pre match atmosphere in the pubs literally across the road from the stadium.Massive plastic jugs of beer and the constant smell of dope and very friendly fans some had even heard of the Bees 😃The stadium has 3 sides and (Bob Dylan did a concert there back in the day ) their Ultras stand in the open end behind the goal and the team have to wait till they all sing a certain song before they are allowed to leave the pitch at the end of the game.If in Madrid skip the game at the Bernabeu ( the tour is excellent though ) head to the poorest area of extreme lefties and watch a game at the Estadio de Vallecas and wear a Che Guevara tee shirt.

The Bernabeu is fine if you get an expensive brief but like the Camp Nou you can be stuck up in the Gods. Getafe, a recent success story, will at least give you a La Liga top division fixture, whereas Leganes are now in the second tier and the stadium lacks atmosphere. The one thing I would suggest is that Madrid is a far better city for a break than Barcelona, not as aesthetic, but the vibe is pleasing, especially late at night.

Been to all those grounds except for Athletico Madrid’s matropolitano but hope to next season.I agree was stuck up in the top tier both time I’ve been to the Bernabeu alongside the usually pitiful handful of away fans.Getafe is pretty souless due mainly to the stadium having only about 20% under cover in what is a concrete bowl.Love my trips to madrid usually get to at least 2 games and love the whole atmosphere around Plaza Mayor very touristy but usually there are plenty of English fans about looking for a fun weekend. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Valencia's not bad, great stadium, whereas nearby Levante is uninspiring. Real Sociedad too, just because one gets the chance to go to San Sebastian, likewise Cordoba.

I’ve only just noticed Sociedad have got rid of the running track. What a difference, looks great now.

I wasn't that taken with the Calderon - it was fine, but didn't do that much for me. I seem to remember having Loftus Road levels of legroom too! Atleti fans were really sound out in Hamburg for our final, so I've got time for them as a club. I really liked the Bernabeu - we were about halfway up and it pulled off the trick of seeming a lot more intimate than I had anticipated - the opposite of the Nou Camp, which just seemed like a big, bland bowl. I don't think you can go wrong with any of Spain's major cities - all well worth repeat visits - but I would also go with Madrid over Barcelona. Two great cities, but Madrid pips it for me.

I am torn neween Madrid or Barcelona for which is the better city, done tours of both the stadiums but Real does stand out, ground staff let my wife take a photo of me in one of the dugouts with my son wearing his QPR top, didn't seem at all bothered about us wandering round the sidelines of the pitch, maybe different now as this was about 15 years ago. Barca thought the same as Konk bit of a soul less place, just vast, favoutite city in Spain is Valencia, great place for a long weekend.

I love Valencia too - I'd struggle to pick my favourite Spanish city as I think it's such a special country. Possibly San Sebastian for the setting and food? Other than Marbella a long time ago, I've never been disappointed with anywhere in Spain.
