I used to love David Coleman's (bit doddery I know) "ONE, NIL" when the first goal went in! The modern day commentators now want to give you a full description of the goal and its importance in the context of the game/season, which gets a bit tedious when it happens all the time. PaulParker is spot on with his list! When you see old football highlights the commentators had a real presence about them without getting in the way of the sport! As for pundits I think the rot set in with Big Ron (specialised subject "the bleed'n obvious").

Hoddle loves the word Pivot, he mentions it every game he does. Plays on the half turn used to be the phrase but Hoddle keeps saying it so that the main commentator will ask him what he means

The reason I ask is because I am currently sitting at my desk at work listening to three Arsenal fans moaning about their team and last night's performance. From listening to them you'd think they lost so just wanted to double check!

Did Arsenal lose last night?

Well they were a bit shoddy in front of goal in the 2nd half, they got 4 in the first half but didnt notch in the 2nd, really should have been about ten or 12 so yes i can understand why the spoilt little darlings are upset!

If people like Hoddle are going to use terms like double 8, 6, 10 and pivot I wish they'd take the time the explain what they mean, cause it all just goes over my head.
I suspect that the next time I'm down the pub or in the office, I'm going to have to listen to all the arm chair coaches use these terms, who probably don't know what they mean either.

In a nutshell. The pundits are not there for you or me but for the Premier/Champions League customers. They need to pretend they know more than who they are talking to
