| 2022/23 Season Possible Parallels to 1982/83 Season 11:54 - Oct 21 with 2914 views | NorthantsHoop | For those of us of a certain vintage could the stars be aligned for Rangers, it is exactly 40 years that in 1982/83 we stormed the old Division 2 title under Terry Venables a brilliant coach and manager, who assembled a cracking team with a blend of youth and experience. We now have a young manager in Mick Beale, around the same age as Venables and have some of the best young players in the Championship mixed with a bit of experience. | | | | |

The 82/83 vintage was a far superior team in my view, as evidenced by the fact they were mathematically at least, in with a shout of the Division One title the following season with two games to go. We utterly bossed games, played teams off the park be it plastic or grass, and defensively - aside of one thumping up at Wolves ironically - we never looked wobbly. But it took Venables a while to get settled. The fact Beale has got us top in his first 15 games as a manager, with all the variables that exist today, is utterly remarkable. We were lucky to have Venables for four years before Barce called and if Beale continues as he is, you could easily see him becoming El Mick in due course.

I recall Terry joined us in the 1980-81 season (?) where results were somewhat indifferent - I'm sure there was a 4-0 defeat at Orient in there somewhere. I think things started taking off because he and Alan Harris were given time by Jim Gregory to mould the team, taking into account a new passing style of play for the new Omniturf (from 1981-82). They also brought of lot of Palace players with them (Fenwick, Flanagan, Allen etc) as well as bringing through youth players from our excellent structure at the time. But let's hope the stars really align from now on... [Post edited 21 Oct 2022 13:12]

Yep, that 4-0 tonking away at Orient involved us playing them off the park. But if comparisons should be made then maybe rewind a further 10 years to 1972-73. A young manager making his way in the game, just 40 years old putting together a team of young players with a few old heads and shrewd signings and we ended up having a bun fight with Burnley for the top spot missing out by one point, with the rest of the division lagging behind.

That game at Orient was unbelievable though. We were all over them and they had four shots and scored with all four. A night game I seem to remember. Edit, sorry I should have read the rest of the posts but I clearly concur. [Post edited 21 Oct 2022 15:03]

Yes, we are enjoying the quality of play and the results from the current team. However, that Venables team was littered with past, present and future internationals. I can't honestly put my hand on my heart and say that many of the current team will play for England. If this team get promoted, get to an FA Cup Final, and qualify for Europe, I'll apologize. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
