Around 9:15 every evening, hundreds of fast moving buggy things are doing their thing buzzing all over the trees; Sycamore ( bastard thing) and a Beech. I’d guess they are around 2 inches long and quick, so I can’t get them with the binoculars. What are they? Stag beetles aren’t that lively, are they? Hurry up, it’s getting dark.

They might be beech bupestrid beetles, according to this article: https://www.waldwissen.net/en/ There are some pictures here: https://inaturalist.ala.org.au That said, the ones you are describing are larger than the ones at the link above. I'm sure someone else on here can come up with a better answer. I know very little about tree pests
