I know we all like to piss 'n' moan ( piss 'n' moan blues by the Gourds - great ) about driving in London, but it seems like every other street has a burst water main and temp traffic lights.
What on earth would it be like if we had a winter like '47 or '63 ?
What's it like where you are ?

It seems they've decided to do all London roadworks right now with no kind of plan of action or coordination.

Even without the roadworks, London roads in general are in a terrible state with potholes etc. I doubt all these extra heavy EVs are helping much...or overpriced and unreliable public transport.

It just feels like managed decline everywhere.

On my motorbike 15 mile commute from the leafy 'burbs of TW2 to the office in Kings Cross there was a two year period (pre-covid/WFH so it was a 5 days a week journey) where my route had a minimum of one traffic-light controlled roadworks but probably averaged 2-3. IIRC I think the most at one point was seven during a two week period. That's one every couple of miles.

I do the same journey once/twice a week now and there are still road works, burst water etc but because it's a now less frequent journey I've kind of become a bit ambivalent but if I had to go back to 5 days a week it would boil my pi$$.

It’s the time of year where councils try to use up all their budget if they get less next years.

Here In Oxfordshire we are Infested with bastard, dangerous potholes, they are of course sodding evil and In the space of the last Five years I've blown Two very expensive tyres.
The only good thing I'll say Is here In Wantage they seem to be building more cycle paths which Is good for the Missus as she loves going out on the bike.
The roads are poorly lit now which doesn't help anybody this time of Year, don't bother trying to tell me that our car tax Is money well spent.

The main cause of potholes is the sh1tbox way they fix them.
This country is reaping the rewards of decades of under investment in key infrastructure.

It's years and years of low hanging fruit decisions coming to bear.
We could resurface the road, or we could just patch it?
Do that enough times and our roads look like Beruit.

Having driven in Europe I can testify the UK's road system is very poor.

It's not just the council. Since we privatised all our services, the Gas, Sewerage, Water and Power all do the bare minimum, getting away with sometimes Victorian infrastructure.

While heavier cars don't help, lets not lose sight of the real cause.

And no, the answer is not to vote for Farage! ;D

Same here in Surrey. I don't like to moan but I hear the phrase 'Broken Britain' quite a lot these days. Quite often from my own lips, admittedly.

I was a trained Street Works Engineer for our Construction Company before I retired, I'd spend days doing risk and method statements before carrying out highways work, meet and discuss with the Police, meet and discuss with the local authority, Do a letter drop to the local community, discuss with the local community, contact the Fire and Ambulance services with plans/time schedule etcetera, shag the housewife from number 28.
And the very day you start work and switch the traffic lights on you get verbally abused by just about every "whingebag" that ever lived.

I heard that it’s a separate company that sets the traffic lights up to the company that does the road works.Maybe that it is different to your days Ted?Or it might be different systems in different areas.

Maybe depends on where you live, but I've only ever had a letter drop about roadworks when it relates to the actual road we live on.

Yes mate It Is a separate Company, we'd only do about Three roadworks per Year and that was enough, the last road works I Managed was in Basingstoke involving two roundabouts, a bloody school a bleeding bus stop an entrance and exit to a large supermarket, and right slap bang In the middle of It all was a zebra crossing.
(we weren't very popular).

We'd have to do adjacent roads depending on the size of the road closure.

Yeh everybody basically having open access to dig it up whenever they like and the lack of joined up thinking doesn't help.

They spent months pedestrianizing and cobbling the road outside our office in EC2A and actually did a nice job of it. Literally one week later Virgin Media came and dug trenches through it and covered them with tarmac.

I think the tarmac is a temporary covering, until they can get someone to lay the cobbles again. Not sure how long they have to remedy it though.

It's mental that the services plead poverty, but actually plan to do these activities more than once

As somone who both cycles and uses a car, I gotta say, the standards of driving on UK roads at the moment is absolutely abysmal.

Two massive bug bears -

people never yielding at junctions and always pulling straight into the road at pace
loads of drivers (and especially prevalent with EVs) turning without indicating?

At first I thought it was maybe being on a bike thing, but I've noticed it when in the car too. I'm mostly sat there thinking I'm surrounded by lunatics

Yeah . I drive into London everyday from watford.
No problem getting there as I leave at 6 o’clock in the morning.
Not so good on the return home . I’m usually working in the west end so I have various routes home.
West end lane , Finchley Road or some times Kentish Town through to Highgate and then pick up the M1 from there . The powers that be in their wisdom have got major road works on All routes as we speak . F**king madness and rank incompetence on their behalf.
I could go via the west way and passed our gaffe but that’s always been a disaster so no joy there.
On the indicators issue . I indicate even if there’s no one around . Force of habit and I have an EV van .
I’m convinced driving standards have got worse since covid .
Most people don’t seem to give a shit anymore . Sad really .

It's at an all time low.
No courtesy, constant blaring of hooter for no reason at all. Plus the babyish exhausts and the " music”

I see quite often people pulling out of a side road knowing full well the person on the main road has right of way but they hope you'll let them go because they've already pulled out that far. I don't and I don't care, fk 'em.

Hardly any bastard Indicates at mini roundabouts, we're speed limited down to 20 MPH here In Wantage town centre so that's as fast as I drive with a big queue of cars following me (tough shit)

I passed my driving test In 1967 and my licence is and always has been clean as a whistle.

Wiltshire roads have given up. For every repair there is now 4 new pot holes attached to the previous repair. Were doing ok for flooding but from what I hear Dorset has disappeared under water.

What we do have a 'lot' of is old folks driving up to said pot holes at 50 braking hard then negotiating slowly around them making getting up to speed impossible. Thick fog, again old folks driving around with no lights on.

We've been building and upgrading the same 10 miles of the A350 since the 1990's, See the Chippenham bypass.

It's like a care home out here.

Your phrase , "Pissing n Moaning" got me remembering a thing from the past Colin. My dad's mate used to play golf with various other men that frequented this particular pub they all went to.

This guy was presented most years with the "Pissing and Moaning" trophy.

Perhaps we ought to have an end of season competition on here, likewise.

A number of strong contenders here - could do battle, no doubt !!!!
