Ron Vlaar Linked Again
Wednesday, 10th Jun 2015 16:56 by Nick Illingsworth

Let's link again, like we did last summer, let's link again like we did last year as Ron Vlaar is rumoured to be coming to St Mary's

Ron Vlaar is a free agent in a few weeks and is believed to have turned down a move to Turkish club Besiktas fuelling rumours that he is about to finally make a move to Southampton as was strongly predicted last summer.

I'm not sure how well this will go down with Saints supporters as Vlaar had a god awful game for Villa at St Mary's a few weeks ago making more than a few suggest that it was lucky that we didn't sign him.

However it was an injury hit year for Vlaar and he never quite played to the standard that had earned him the nickname Concrete Ron by Villa fans.

He is still being linked with Manchester United however having just turned 30 he may not be the attraction he was to Van Gaal paving the way to join up with his old Feyenoord boss Ronald Koeman.

Certainly central defence is an area that Saints need to tighten up in, whilst Jose Fonte and Toby Alderweireld were outstanding last season, the reality is that Florin Gardos is not up to the standard yet and Yoshida is not good enough for the number of games he was required to play in 2014/15

Saints need to have 3 Premier quality central defenders and Vlaar could fit the bill for one of those positions, although personally I would also like to see us sign a third central defender to go alongside Fonte and Vlaar.

I'm not sure which is worse. The cheesy intro or the news of possibly signing Vlaar… I'll go with the latter.

I agree we do need to strengthen the centre of defence. With the hopeful increase in games in a successful European campaign, injuries / suspensions are bound to mount up and have an impact. Therefore we need squad depth. But Vlaar wouldn't be my first choice. Yes, he has experience but I think he is too slow and limited in ability. A squad player maybe and useful for certain games if a free agent.

Will it be a case of
" who's that flying up there?
Is it a bird? No.
Is it a plane? No.
Is it a twister? It's Ron Vlaar!!"

He didn't look too solid when the Saints ran rings around him and is pals to put six past Villa a few weeks ago. You might suspect that could be the reason they have let him go.

Villa fans are praying that he doesn't sign a new contract (which I think has been offered) and moves on!

on the other hand, Ryan Bertrand did not impress at Villa and even a top class player would struggle in Villa's current back four which is dire.
