Leicester City Plotting Double Raid On St Mary's
Thursday, 11th Jun 2020 08:18

Back in January it was a shock that Leicester seemed to want Jannick Vestergaard, now it seems they may return and look for a double signing.

When Brendan Rodgers was linked with Jannick Vestergaard back in January it puzzled Saints fans, the Danish central defender had not exactly impressed during his time at St Mary's and indeed had played in the Saints team that lost 9-0 at home to the Foxes back in October, indeed he had been so poor that he was substituted at half time with Saints 5-0 down.

But it seems that Leicester are still keen on Vestergaard and are also looking to sign Ryan Bertrand whose sending off on that awful night after only 12 minutes sparked a complete collapse.

Ironically they want him to replace Ben Chilwell who scored the "winner" just before the departure of the Saints left back for a tackle not seen by the ref but picked up by VAR.

Saints themselves have opened talks with Bertrand who will turn 31 in August, long term they see Jake Vokins who made an impressive debut in the FA Cup against Huddersfield as the replacement for Bertrand, but they know he is not quite ready to be plunged into the first team full time just yet.

Bertrand has often been linked with a move from St Mary's, he seemed to have an agent keen to get him a move to a top four side and he was linked with more than a couple of the Big Six, none of those vaunted moves turned out to be anything more than media rumours and you felt that Bertrand had lost his mojo realising that he was not going to play for another big club, indeed his unfair axing from the 2018 World Cup squad only added to his scowl.

It will be interesting to see if either of these moves happen, if they did I think not many Saints supporters will be too sad, Vestergaard has never quite clicked at St Mary's and Ryan Bertrand has always seemed to want to leave, to raise some much needed transfer funds from their sale as well as freeing up money that could be used for salaries would be better.

Certainly we need another central defender even if Vestergaard stayed, if Bertrand goes we could easily find an experienced left back for the short term.

We don’t appear to have easily found an experienced right-back for the short-term, so I would have my doubts about our ability to find an experienced left-back.

Bertrand is a class act. When do you ever see him get outclassed by an attacking player from the oppo? Need to keep him.

If Bertrand manages to get one last move to a club higher up the table then good for him, let him go. But if not then we should keep him. One our our few top level performers.

Bit harsh that on Bertrand, he was understandably frustrated by the ridiculous picking of Rose by the biased Southgate but I have generally thought him excellent.

Vestergaard meanwhile is hopeless. £26 million for him is beyond ridiculous. I simply can’t believe anybody would be daft enough to pay anything like that for him.

Is this the opportunity for Sam McQueen to get back in the first team? He seems to be one of the forgotten players, having been out on loan and then suffering long term injury issues, but I thought he looked a decent player, especially going forward. Whether or not his future lies at St Mary's I'd like to think that his career is still yet to reach it's potential. Bertrand would probably see a move to Leicester as his last opportunity to play in Europe and if he leaves then I certainly wish him well.

Bertrand has been very good for us during tough times. I would be sad to see him go. As Jim Bowen would have said to Veestegaard, 'here's your bus fare home'. Any fee would be hilarious.

If we can get back what we paid for JV I would take it. Either he isn't up to it or he doesn't fit our system. Either way time to move him on.

I'm surprised that RB has come in for a bit of stick. He isn't captain material but he's usually one of our better performers. Certainly the best member of our defense for the majotity of the last 2 seasons. If we can get a year or 2 more I would take it. Unless Brenda has the chequebook again....

Bertrand will definitely not leave. When he joined permanently in 2015 the club allowed him to stay at his Surrey house in Chobham near the Chelsea training ground. He is from London and wants to live there because he also has business interests in London.

Would hate to see Bertrand go, we also need that senior leader voice in the dressing room which will be even more important if we lose PEH. One of our best players no doubt.
