| Grant Hall on 00:41 - Mar 8 by kensalriser | 30 appearances (all starts) and 5 goals this season. We could do with more sicknote defenders like this. |
One swallow doesn't make a spring. We've been stung before by players suddenly turning it on when their contract is up. Aside from salary expectations, QPR should base their negotiations on performances over 5 seasons as well as predictions from medical staff as to his future health. Remember too that the defence has hardly covered itself in glory this season with 62 goals conceded in 37 matches. Only Hull and Luton have conceded more. If Grant has started 30 times this season then he's a big part of that. [Post edited 9 Mar 2020 13:34]

In fairness he played 30+ times in his first two seasons and will probably do the same this year. It was one injury that kept him out, not several different ones at different times. I would have thought, on sensible terms, he’d be worth an extension. Given the upheaval last Summer I would have thought the club are keen to keep comings and goings to a minimum, just look to build.

As I said, judge him over the 5 seasons. He's featured in 109 games in 5 years so hardly prolific. Granted one key injury kept him out midway through that period but his fragility is well documented so it must be a factor in the club's thinking. It would be simply foolish not to consider whether Grant's body will be able to cope with the rigours of the championship as he approaches his thirties. In addition, quantity of appearances doesn't necessarily mean quality. Going forwards QPR have been entertaining this season but defensively they have been abysmal, conceding 62 goals already, the third highest in the league. Hall has played well in parts but has also had some poor games, in particular struggling in Barbet's absence. Now I'm not suggesting that we should simply get shot but at the same time it's not a done deal. For me, the club needs to ask itself a few questions to justify resigning Grant. What's the club's ambition next season? If it's to push-on for the play-offs, is Grant good enough to help the team achieve that? Is Grant willing to re-sign on reduced terms? Do the medical staff think his body will hold up for the next 2-3 years? Will Masterson get more game time next season? Has MW identified better options (e.g. he was looking at McKenna earlier in the season)? Is Grant prepared to be more of a squad player next season? Can Grant slot into the defensive midfield role if required? Are there other areas of the team that are more pressing? Will QPR secure big money for some of their starlets? Why so many questions, you may ask? Well, QPR will be operating on a tight budget again next season so to remain competitive they'll need to take a holistic view on signings. If the club feels that Grant can do a job going forward and he fits into the overall structure then fine. If however he's looking for that last big payday and/or the medical team feel that his body will degrade in the coming years then we part as friends.
| Grant Hall on 07:41 - Mar 10 with 725 views | Gloucs_R | Barbet Masterson Wallace Ball All can play CB. So I reckon he'll go and be replaced by a cheaper, younger option. The lad from Spurs and maybe a know experienced CB. | |
