Sell Jon Varane ?
at 18:11 12 Jan 2026

I considered that angle until I read "If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all." That laid bare the true nature of the comment.

Besides, there is no evidence to support the notion that QPR fans are holding Jonathon to a higher standard because his brother was a top footballer. Jude and Jobe are full brothers and are playing in the same era. Raphael is retired and Jonathon is his half-brother.

The simple truth of the matter is Jonathon is an average footballer. If anyone is offering £5-6 million for his services, QPR should bite their hand off.

Sell Jon Varane ?

"Maybe Varane gets so much stick on this forum because of his name. Sure Jobe Bellingham could offer some nuggets of help to overcome such a situation."

His first name, Jonathon, is very common in England. His surname, Varane, has Germanic and Slavic roots.

"If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all."

Sam Field gets a lot of criticism so that's that theory blown to SMITHereens.

"Just a thought of mine....."

A nonsense thought. Stop race baiting.

Fourth Round Here We Come Match Thread
at 18:07 11 Jan 2026

Overall I thought we were ok but feel like it was an opportunity missed, particularly after we equalised. I think West Ham were there for the taking but once it went to extra time there was only going to be one winner. Fans were excellent, as always.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. Varane is average to middling. He's made to look better than he really is by the paucity of options we have in central midfield.

The cold reality is that £5-6 million is good money for a player with limited ability who is unlikely to play at a higher level or command a bigger fee. Moreover, there's no guarantee Varane will extend his contract in future so you risk ultimately losing the player for nothing.

What I would say is that if he is to be sold it must be permanent. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of a loan with a view to buy because of the risk of injury during the loan spell.

A miracle that he managed to score 46. Given his wicket away just before lunch. A complete and utter lack of discipline that may well change the complexion of this match.

Here's hoping for many more poor performances from Rayan in a QPR shirt in future.

January transfer rumours
at 22:04 2 Jan 2026

That's not my understanding. I read that Cifuentes sacrificed some salary at Leicester to help cover half of QPR's compensation fee. That would suggest that our contract was still very much in force when the move to Leicester was negotiated and explains the rationale behind placing him on gardening leave.

Frey on the move?
at 21:51 2 Jan 2026

Whilst I agree that Frey was never built for speed he was more agile last season, if a little injury prone. This season he appears to have lost any athleticism and looks very awkward on the pitch. The footballing equivalent of dad dancing. One thing I can't question, however, is his attitude so for his sake and ours, I hope he secures a decent permanent move in the January transfer window.

Blackburn have on-going, severe drainage and waterlogging issues. It's so bad that their manager, Valerien Ismael, has offered to sacrifice transfer funds for a new surface!

It's been a bugbear of mine for a wee while. With so many wide options there really is no need to play inverted wingers. Get to the by-line and deliver.

Tall poppy syndrome. If I were you, I'd view these messages as a sign that you're doing something right. Difficult I know but such hate campaigns are usually driven by envy.

And I wonder whether that's now playing on the player's minds. Rather than re-start on the front foot, they tend to try and keep it tight, something we're not particularly adept at doing.

Frey on the move?

Having recently signed a new contract in September, reports are now emerging linking Michael Frey with a move in the January transfer window.

If true, I can't say I'm surprised as he's looked particularly immobile this season and is behind Kone, Burrell and Kolli in the pecking order.

The club today released a statement condemning social media abuse of Paul Smyth and his family on Instagram.

It beggars belief that a player who gives his all and has just signed a contract extension is subjected to such treatment. Hopefully the perpetrator will be identified and dealt with.

Goals conceded around Half Time - Mentality Minions?
at 13:26 2 Jan 2026

My pleasure.

Yes, we've scored late winners against Charlton (H), Stoke (H), Bristol City (A), Blackburn (A), and Birmingham (A). Of those matches only Charlton scored just after half time. By contrast only Norwich have scored against us late on so it appears that if we can get through the first half and re-start unscathed, we have a good chance of nicking a win.

The trouble is that when QPR do concede after the re-start, more often than not they lose the game. They have shown glimpses of bouncing back in games ( Charlton and Hull H) but more often than not conceding swifts the momentum in the opponent's favour.

I would understand that if our opponents were warming up before the second half kicks off but in the vast majority of cases they simply come out of the tunnel raring to go. For me it's more mental than physical and the more it happens, the greater the mental block.

Goals conceded around Half Time - Mentality Minions?
at 23:43 1 Jan 2026

After yet another poor start to the second half against Norwich, I thought I'd take a look at previous results to identify whether QPR have a real problem with conceding goals either side of half time. Here's what I came up with:

MATCH MINUTE RESULT
Preston (H) 48’ Drew 1-1
Plymouth (A Cup) 48’, 54' Lost 2-3
Coventry (A) 43’, 47’ Lost 1-7
Charlton (H) 54’ Won 3-1
Millwall (H) 45+4’ Lost 1-2
Ipswich (H) 47’ Lost 1-4
Southampton (H) 50’ Lost 1-2
Hull (H) 51’ Won 3-2
Middlesbrough (A) 50’ Lost 1-3
Portsmouth (A) 45’ Drew 1-1
West Brom (A) 55’ Lost 1-2
Norwich (H) 46’ Lost 1-2

That's 14 goals conceded either side of HT across 12 matches. QPR lost 8 of these games and won just 2. 7 of these defeats were in the League, representing 70% of our 10 defeats to date.

At the time of writing QPR have conceded 39 league goals, the second worst defensive record in the Championship only behind our next opponents Sheffield Wednesday. 31% (12 goals) have been conceded either side of half-time, and a staggering 26% (10 goals) conceded just after the restart.

For completeness, I'd like to know what the average is for the division but these raw statistics clearly show a key weakness that opponents are exploiting. IMHO, starting second halves slowly is a mentality issue but I'd be interested in hearing what other folk think about this problem and how to address it.

That was utterly abysmal. Abject in every position and all facets of the game. No one comes out of this game with any credit. Big improvement required in the next match.
