| If you were a Pro footballer would you ......... 11:26 - Jan 19 with 2741 views | loftboy | Want to play as often as possible or...... Chase the money and move to a club and then not get played ala Freeman, Manning soon to be BOS. I know in my line of work even an extra £ an hour would make a huge difference but surely when you’re on at least 1/4 million a year the taxman is going to take a huge chunk of any extra you get. You spend a lot of your best years at work, I think everyone needs to think they're doing something worthwhile. Plenty of people accept lower wages for better job satisfaction so if you really loved a club, your team-mates, the manager, and the team was playing well, you might accept lower wages instead of a leap into the dark with a new club and uprooting your family if you're settled. But hanging around a mediocre team when you could get paid a fortune elsewhere, play at a higher level, work with better managers is for the birds. You'd spend the rest of your life wondering "what if?" I think football pay is obscene and is destroying community clubs, but these guys have worked hard from childhood to even get to be professional footballers, they have short careers, they generally come from poor backgrounds and big money's a chance to pay back parents, friends and other family, to give their own kids chances they never had - come on guys, would you really say no? Another aspect of this is that the pay is how you measure your success now, more than medals and caps. I've read Premier League players saying they were happy until they found out a player they thought was no better than them was getting paid more. I can get that, you'd be thinking "do they really think that guy's better than me?" We want players to have pride in their performance, money is actually part of that though I wish it wasn't. | | | |

Without a doubt, i'd be desperate to start every single game and never be substituted if possible. Obviously, if i was getting paid peanuts for a low division team and a club came in with an offer that could secure my families' future in one fell swoop, that'd be a bit different. Leave QPR for Turkey, though? Not a fcuking chance. It's why i don't miss any of them that you mentioned. I don't like people like that. Bad hearts. | | | |

Money through the tv deals has meant the game I loved in the 70's to mid 90's is not the same anymore (to me). I still love QPR and football but not as much as I did. Unfortunately I relate a lot less to footballers these days. I understand why they chase the money but the way football is structured many clubs have got a new team of players to follow each season - so it is harder to build up rapport with them before they leave a year or two later. Not many players stay at a club more than 3 or 4 seasons anymore. [Post edited 20 Jan 2021 4:37]

| If you were a Pro footballer would you ......... on 09:50 - Jan 20 with 521 views | westberksr | there is also the inner peer pressure of knowing what others are getting paid and feeling you deserve a slice of that too. my romantic heart says I'd play for QPR for 15 years on a fair salary and retire in comfort; my brain and pocket says take the money and fukk off to a big club and take the chance of getting splinters in my arse that would be comforted by the £50 note stuffed cushion i'd take everywhere with me. also these guys may have no allegiance to a club and not be fans or particularly interested in football; just happen to be good at it. In which case the payslip is the sole motivator. | | | |
| If you were a Pro footballer would you ......... on 17:17 - Jan 20 with 485 views | The_Beast1976 | Early in your career you should just want to play, play, play, and develop to be the best you can be. In the earlier part of mid-career you could then go primarily for the money if you wanted to (i.e. if you play you play, but if not then at least you are setting yourself up for later life), then in later career (once you've set yourself up financially for the future) it's back to play, play, play. However, a mixture of both is actually probably best in my view (i.e. play regularly and be the best you can be all of your career, and earn good money (but maybe not the most money) all your career). I think I'd do the mixture option i.e. I'd want to play as much as possible and be the best I can be, and would accept a fair to middling salary to do so (rather than getting top whack). But everyone's different. Some want more money than others. [Post edited 20 Jan 2021 17:22]

| If you were a Pro footballer would you ......... on 18:40 - Jan 20 with 451 views | plasmahoop | Sometimes players don't enjoy playing anymore. Didn't bobby zamora admit that, hence the song? I think that's probably quite common. You start off loving the game, but all the fun gets coached out of it. I remember nasser Hussain saying that with cricket, spending all your time in an indoor net having your technique analysed was soul destroying. Plus the other thing is, whenever you get more money you spend up to it, and need more. I'd like to think I wouldn't, but in reality I probably would | | | |
