It was in their own hands as well. The new manager had bottom half teams in all his games in charge. They spent big for that league and had loans too, but ultimately bottled it big time.
It must really bug them that Us and Brighton are TWO leagues above them again and even little Bournemouth will be ONE or possibly TWO leagues above them next season as well !!

Little Pompey go into their 22nd season in the bottom 2 divisions. They've found their level. They are an established lower league team.
Playing Jonah Whatmough, the own goal and red card specialist, was a masterstroke from Cowley and it's probably what clinched them another season in the lower leagues. I first saw what Whatmough could do in the FA Youth Cup when he led Little Pompey to a 7-0 defeat at St Mary's. Since then, he's never failed to sabotage the Little Pompey defence whenever he's been called upon.
Pity the Pompey Boo Boys couldn't be there to get on the backs of their players and hound their latest manager out of Fratton.

Absolute masterstroke by Cowley to bring Whatmough back for this crucial game. He may not have managed to score an own goal this time but he still found a way to beat Little Pompey again.
The only reason they got enough points to finish as high as 8th is because Whatmough was suspended for 8 games because of his 2 red cards. Cowley must surely make him his captain next season:

Apparently they are not ready to go up to the heights of the second division just yet. This was all part of the plan just like the previous 3 or is it 4 seasons.
They are building the foundations and intend to dominate the third division for some years to come. Then, and only then, will they storm up the championship. When they are ready...

Similarly on a call with a Skate colleague earlier, I gave him a little dig about not making the play-offs.
He actually said that even though they probably deserved to get in, it would not have been fair on the new manager as the expectation on him would be too much too soon !!
I said that after they lost the Cup to Salford, they waited until ALL their remaining fixtures were against lower half opposition before appointing the manager, yet they still fvcked it up - even when it was in their own hands on the last day !!
He just muttered some drivel and came back with the usual Skate reply that we'd be playing him next season !! WAC | |
