Very sad, he seemed like a genuinely lovely bloke. He gave us a clap at his testimonial match, which was nice. And of course, unfortunately from his point of view, he features in one of the most iconic photos in Saints' history.
If you're in your 50s or older and you're often getting up in the night for pee, or if you're struggling to piss even though your bladder's full, get yourself to a doctor. It's probably nothing, but it's better to be safe than sorry. A PSA test probably saved my life. |

I thought the Northam was ok in the second half, it was after Stoke equalised in the first half it all went very quiet. Do the ones at the back who start/lead the chanting all go out for a fag or something as soon as the other team score? It's very odd. |

Baker did have a couple of horrendous games, but he played in the 1986 FA Cup run (due to Gerry Forrest being cup-tied) right up until the semis and I thought he did ok. Unfortunately for him, he was dropped for the semi at WHL cos Nicholl opted to play Nick Holmes at right back if memory serves me right.
Van Gobbel was truly terrible, although didn't he help get Roy Keane sent off at The Dell? |

Blaney made that wonder save from Shearer on his debut. It was voted as save of the season by Sky Sports viewers. We had high hopes for the lad but he only made two more appearances, and after some loans and a couple of lower league moves he ended up back in Northern Ireland. Our record of our youth team keepers going on to play for the first team is pretty abysmal. |

I saw him play in a charity football match at Great Yarmouth once. I also remember him hosting the kids programme The Saturday Banana which was filmed just up the road from SMS at Southern TVs Northam studios. I was walking home from school and our next door neighbour shouted over the hedge "We've signed Kevin Keegan!". It was hard to take in - I guess the equivalent nowadays would be announcing the signing of Harry Kane. Keegan's influence was massive, both on and off the pitch, especially his sponsorship deal with Patrick which saw the club adopt them as their kit supplier and everyone started wearing Patrick boots. The excitement and hype in the build up to Keegan's first match at The Dell is difficult to describe... sleepy Southampton suddenly became the focus of the football world's press. It was an incredible couple of years, the only regret is that he left just as Shilton was arriving. With those two in the team I genuinely believe we might have won the league. |

None of those three events cost the club minus four points and a potential 200 million quid, or even got the team chucked out of a competition. And why didn't you mention the Bob Higgins case? From what I gather, people in the club at the time knew about it, or at least had concerns, but did nothing. That is truly more shameful than any of the three things you listed. |

I don't think football chants should be taken too literally. After all, I'm not entirely sure that we are by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. And I've yet to meet a Saints fan who has got his father's gun and shot the Pompey scum. That said, the bloke my dad used to go to games with back in the day was a strawberry grower and drove a tractor, although as far as I know he could definitely read and write. |

I don't know the official attendance, but the ground looked just under half full, so I would say that 13 or 14K is a pretty decent turn out for a match like this (and for context, thats not a lot less than attended the Benali and Doddsy testimonials at The Dell when testimonials were still a big thing and the likes of Shearer, Flowers, etc, did turn up to play). Some of the 76 squad were interviewed on the pitch at half time. It was disappointing Mike Channon wasn't there but maybe there was a race on somewhere. As for the players you mentioned, to the best of my knowledge Luke Shaw is still playing for the proper Man U team and Beattie, Flowers, and I'm sure one or two others, have coaching commitments on a Saturday afternoon. Beckham's appearance fee would've bankrupted the club and Giggs would have tried to shag all the other players' wives, so his absence was understandable.
But people are right, calling it a 'Legends' match was a very long stretch of the imagination in many cases. However, despite that, I and everyone else I spoke to, enjoyed the occasion and, having watched the dire England friendly on telly the previous night, I know which match I would have preferred to have attended. |

I went along with my lad and we really enjoyed it. Seeing SRL score again in front of the Northam End was probably worth the money alone. And it was fantastic to see the likes of Killer and big Ken Monkou back again. Lee Barnard and Josh Hoiveld have clearly looked after themselves and were the fittest ones in our team by miles. It was actually quite a competitive game. Man U took it pretty seriously, especially towards the end, by which time the average age of the Saints team must have risen to about 60. Decent crowd too, I thought. Someone on here called the event a 'flop' the other day, it definitely wasn't that. |
