| refs on 18:14 - Dec 19 by Northernr | Would love to know how they've come to the conclusion that Kane's tackle isn't a red card and Robertson's is. With that ridiculous Newcastle penalty decision, and Xhaka last night, it's been a very poor weekend for the refereeing/VAR combo. |
Last night was poor. Newcastle pen - how have both not seen that as a pen? The Liverpool pen, erm that's a pen - again both miss that? Kane - just about see why Tierney didn't give it, but VAR? Robertson - the opposite how has Tierney (and the AR who was close) thought that was only a yellow? 24 seconds to disallow Wolves' goal, 30 seconds to allow City's 3rd. Correct calls (for balance!) the Alli non pen and the Salah non handball. Here's what I just posted on RefChat re VAR "Back to a question I've (tediously) posed before - last night without VAR - any worse/better; more/less reaction? Would still be 'wrong' decisions, still be the huge media 'reaction', still be the largely uninformed social media reaction - oh and it wouldn't have taken 24 seconds to disallow the Wolves goal, or 30 seconds to allow City's 3rd. Seriously, would just have been another evening of debateable calls, plain wrong calls and loads and loads of good decisions (that no one would mention) - that any 'worse' to last night?" and here is a reply I agree with 100% "As a whole with VAR more correct decisions are being made, but it's not worth the ruined experience for something that promises so much and delivers so little."

| refs on 18:17 - Dec 19 by Northernr | I think they're both red. But you can't reach different conclusions for them. It's either they're both red or neither are red. If the referee got one look at both and got it wrong I'd forgive, but to have video review and come to those decisions is so, so poor. |
To drill down a little. Problem is getting the 'clear and obvious' threshold correct. At the beginning of VAR it was clearly wrong , VAR looking for ANY contact in the penalty area, some that no one, including the players, had seen in real time, and awarding a pen, without the referee even looking at it again. THEN they decided referee WAS to look at 'reviews' - which tbf is something IFAB wanted from the start. THEN they decided that was happening too much, taking too long, so they raised the bar for clear and obvious - BUT as last night shows, it is now far too high - if a player being shoved in the back or a GK taking out a player at knee height isn't 'clear and obvious' - what is?
