Atmosphere 15:41 - Aug 11 with 4359 viewsBoss_Hog

I feel as though the lads responsible for trying to get the atmosphere going in The Sandy Lane deserve their own thread.

Tuesday was my first game of the season and despite only 1400 home fans, they kept the noise levels and positivity going and they deserve credit for that. People and fans are quick to moan, so give them the credit the deserve when something good happens.

Keep it up lads, us oldies appreciate the singing and improved atmosphere.

Can the club help in any way? Music choices just before kick off, same again at half time and full time if the result goes our way. Just a thought and may already have happened, if not reach out to them as it can be a combined effort to improve atmosphere.

Moggy would have been proud.

Agreed they did a great job.

I think it should grow as well as the season progresses and more Overcoaters join the group. Mates of mates so to speak.

Above all else I just hope that it self polices and the excellent start is not spoiled by any over excited fan be it drug or alcohol induced.

I am thinking flares / any thrown object / going onto the pitch etc...

Unfair to prempt possible as bar one pitch invasion Moggy style tribute.. it was all good natured and loud.. just what we needed.

Lets hope it continues to grow.

Atmosphere in the Sandy has been good recently.
It takes me back wistfully to when, as a young teenager, I used to stand in roughly the same spot as I do these days and see these lads following the team enthusiastically.
Great to see.
This predates the Moggy era, when the likes of Barry Haslam and his sidekick "Sunshine" (never knew his real name!) used to get the Sandy going.

I think "Sunshine " was / is David Pearce. He was in my class at school. I think he caught the Dale bug when we had occasional "class outings" to nearby grounds. Last time I saw him he was working for the Post Office, he will be long retired now I expect. His speciality at school was bashing out " glad all over" using his desk lid...altogether now...."and Im feeling BANG BANG glad wll over,, yes Im BANG BANG glad all over..... you get the gist.

Their twitter account seems to be really well run and the organisation is obviously there so would hope they’d be open to ensuring there’s some self-policing to keep what is already a pretty good reputation.

It would maybe be an idea for the Trust to reach out to a couple of those involved to create a link which would help deal with any possible issues that could arise in the future.

Not forgetting Vinny Loftus who was a mainstay of the Sandy Lane with Barry Haslam in the 1960's and 70's.

Nice to see Barry still going to matches, though behaving far more sedately these days.

"Sunny" (It was David Pearse) was a great character. Sad to report he passed away a few years back after retiring from Royal Mail due to ill health.

I’d forgotten all about Vinny.
He was a couple of years above me at St Wilfrids I think.

Sorry to hear that and thankyou for letting me know. I only saw him a few times after school, usually picking up the local post in a van, he was a real character even at school where he would hide in a cupboard rather than do Latin and for a while kept a " fart bottle" that he topped up frequently and threatened to release at the end of our O level exams by way of a celebration! Character hardly does him justice!....

I agree with this, the atmosphere vs Burton was the best I've seen/heard outside of big cup and derby games.

Youthful exuberance will need to be kept in check at times but I think the lads involved are pretty good at that already. They're a good bunch. It's also nice to see them getting the really young fans involved, helping them get chants started etc. Starting a chant at 12 years old will give them more of a buzz than Colombian Marching Powder.

Robbie agrees too.

Is that Gazza half way up on the right with his sunglasses on his head?

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

Latin apart, in later life, Sunny was a very well read man and very articulate, even after a few beers which he was always partial to.

The fart story doesn't surprise. He did have a certain, erm, ability in that department.
At the old sorting office in Rochdale (now at the back of The Medicine Tap) Sunny would be there with his colleagues in long alleys of sorting frames preparing the morning's first delivery.

One morning, after a good sesh the night before, he let one rip. Slowly, those near him started to cough and gip. As time passed by, this cloud of noxious gas drifted around the sorting office and took the breath away from posties one by one as it crept it's evil way from one man/woman to another. Sunny just stood there, and carried on with his work, whistling contentedly to himself amid the coughing and shouts of "you dirty arsed bastard".

Wonder if he ever cleared The Sandy?

RIP David.

Edit: He would have been of a similar age to Moggy, maybe a year or three older?

I’m the same age as Moggy and Sunny was certainly three or four years older.
