Can’t seperate some of them:

Marsh and Bowles joint 1st
3rd Currie
Then wegerle and adel
Then Byrne and stainrod

Picked in that order based purely on enjoyment I got watching them.

Rodney Marsh - 211 appearances - 106 goals for the Rangers.

Nuff said.

Stan did it in the top division (and Europe), Rodney barely played for QPR in Division One and he was hardly fit the one season he spent in the top flight with the club when we went down with record fewest points.
Stan comfortably for me, although Rodney obviously played a big role in the growth of the club.

Rodney Marsh - 211 appearances - 106 goals for the Rangers. (Goal every 1.99 games).
Stan Bowles - 255 appearances - 70 goals. (Goal every 3.64 games).
Adel Taarabt - 157 appearances - 34 goals. (Goal every 4.62 games).

Regardless of the quality of the opposition, Rodney Marsh brought me far more enjoyment than either Stan or Adel).

By that basis, George Goddard and Brian Bedford would be our best players ever. You can;t look at goalscoring as the sole decided for No 10s. For starters, Stan used to take all the corners from the right side, so was thus missing out on a lot of goalscoring opportunities.

Of course the quality of the opposition matters. There was one point in the club's history that we were probably the best team in the country and Stan was completely central to that.

George Goddard and Brian Bedford were centre forwards, number 9's not 10's, but I'm old enough to have seen Bedford quite a bit and he'd still rate highly for what he did back then.

Perhaps Stan took the corners because he wasn't so effective at heading and knew that.
Marsh had excellent feet but his heading ability was still pretty good.

You can only judge these guys from what you see and I saw Marsh tear teams apart with his talent on a regular basis. Sure he has good players around him but he was exceptional during his years for us. His skills were magnificent as were Bowles' but all round Marsh was, in my opinion, far the better of the two. He scored 22 goals in 63 first division appearances for Fulham before moving to the Rangers. That's a goal every 2.86 first division games and that's still a better ratio than Bowles achieved.

I started with Stan so am in his corner, but respect everything I've seen / read about what Rodney did for our club.

Perhaps the more interesting debate is 'best 10s excluding Rodney & Stanley'?

One thing I don't think gets celebrated or recognised enough, especially outside our W12 bubble, is that the club managed to keep this tradition going for so many years after these two greats, arguably at a time when 10s weren't so prevalent...in my mind, we went almost seamlessly from them, via a brief bit of Currie, to Stainrod to Byrne to Wegerle - all four a delight to watch.

Also good to see the renaissance / recognition of the meaning of the number within the QPR community in recent years - Akos, Adel (eventually), Eze, Chair

Got to say Wegerle was such an artist of the game.

Him and Les up top with Sinton and Impey on the wings and Raymondo in the middle.

That team was massively underestimated not only by the opposition but by us as fans.

Royston and Leslie together was an all too brief encounter.

Yeah I'd say this is they key. Stan did it for us for longer and at a consistently higher level.

When comparing the likes of Stan and Rodney to Adel and probably even Wegerle, it's worth remembering there were professional assassins lumbering about on football pitches back in the 60s and 70s whose sole purpose was to break and maim anything remotely skilful.

Rodders scored against Leicester in the 1967 League Cup in the 4-2 demolition,Foxes were one of England's top sides.
And he also scored in a Wembley Cup final don't forget.

As you say, it depends on the era. I do think it's much harder now for a number ten as the game has become tighter and no. 10's have 3 or 4 players on them when they get the ball in dangerous positions these days. I know Stan and Rodney were totally intuitive and left defenders flat-footed but there is no way that they would be as successful in the modern era as they were in their day.
[Post edited 27 Dec 2022 19:47]

Maybe, but would players like that not enjoy the advantage of the modern ball, better piches and the protection that they get from the referess?

I remember in one game in front of a big crowd Springet did a big up and under and as the ball went toward the centre circle and players were all jostling to get a head on it Rodney leaps up and catches the ball in two hands then tucks it under his arm and with the other one out stretched made a mazy run half the length of the pitch and touched the ball down behind the goal line for an imaginary try, stood there with arms above his head, the crowd went ballistic. The game was restarted with a free kick to the opposition and no card.

We used to have policemen not stewards at football matches and at one match after a period of heavy rain in the pre match warm up a loose ball went to the touchline where a policeman stood, Rodney called him to kick it back which Mr policeman duly did and went flat on his arse in the mud much to the amusement of the crowd, Marsh waited for him to get back on his feet and calmly rolled the ball back to him for another go which was refused much to the amusement of the watching faithful.

Marsh ridiculed another player who had clattered him at Loftus Road and given a free kick away, He took a quick free kick and received the ball back the same player then launched another assault on Rodney who as the player charged in deftly passed the ball through his legs and under control again, instead of moving the ball on Rodney waited and same player comes at Marsh again with a predictable same result again, now the crowd are up and olays are being chanted.
Magic days not all football but great fun, the Rodney era, best football time of my life.

Marsh said don't call me a footballer, I am an entertainer and by god he was.

Fantastic stuff, cyprusmel. You've captured the sheer fun of watching QPR in those days, and particularly Rodney.

I've mentioned this before but my favourite Rodney trick was his overhead kick/cross from the corner into the oppos penalty area with his back to goal. All the lads in the Loftus Road kids' pen would cheer madly when he brought the ball into the corner knowing what he was about to do. The oppo defence usually had no idea what was going on!

Happiest of days!

Happy indeed Dmm not only did they have no idea what he was doing they couldn't appreciate the fact that he could do it again and again in the same match.

I saw Rodney's debut game at Peterborough which ended 1-1 our goal was made by him, he picked up the ball in our half then bizarrely started to run taking giant steps a bit like John Cleese on speed, the Posh boys couldn't believe it and backed away from him then right foot came down and the left one placed a perfectly weighted through ball for John Collins to score. Posh couldn't believe what they had just seen and neither could we.
Rodney Marsh was a major talking point on the way back home, little did we know then what was to come.

Another story involving Rodney began at a Rangers training session after the weekend games, Manchester United's George Best had taken a corner which curved out and back to hit the crossbar and Dennis Law ? had headed in the rebound. Rodney insisted that Best and Law worked this out in training and the other players said it was not possible so Rodney took 7 corners and hit the bar 4 times and thought that he had proved his point, it could be done. These days we have a job getting the ball over the 1st man.
