I disagree with your view about gifts to an individual being different to a donation to a party, the guy that donated £15m to the Conservatives has public contracts, is that linked ? Robert Jenrick was housing minister when he illegally intervened in a planning issue for a Conservative donor who happened to donate £12k around the same time, so there may be links and this is an area that needs tightening up. We’ve also seen numerous comments about the donations made by unions to the Labour Party.

Times radio will push very hard on this because it’s a right leaning media outlet.

Disagreement is, of course, allowed and even welcomed in a discussion forum. However, the distinction between gifts and donations is there in guidance, and it is pretty obvious that gifts often translate into a personal benefit in a way that donations to central party funds do not. This is reflected in the regulatory arrangements. The rules concerning donations also warrant scrutiny, but advantage there works in a less direct way as far as individual politicians are concerned.

I stand by my point that references to past donations to the Tory Party won't do much to stifle the present press frenzy about freebies, which is hotting up with the story about Lord Alli helping out a Labour peer involved in an expenses scandal with a loan to pay the money back. Take a look at the news outlets today right across the spectrum from the Indy to GB News. Incidentally, if you listen regularly to Times Radio, you will find it is at the socially-liberal end of the spectrum, and was quite positive towards Labour before the recent governmental mis-steps.

The current focus on this story is partly be cause Starmer made a big fuss about Tory donations and spent time on stunts like going into a wallpaper shop when Johnson was redecorating number 10.
Starmer in a way has created the focus on this story.

I am not an expert on this, but it seems a complicated area. On the one hand, there is the Senedd’s Register of Members’ Interests relating to gifts and donations, on which apparently Gething did not declare the £200K donation. On the other hand, there are the Electoral Commission rules on donations. It seems that it was from the Electoral Commission that details of the size of the Gething donation became public. So as far as I can see, this is a donation rather than a gift but a donation to an MS rather than to central party funds. Some have argued that the rules in this area of donations to individual MSs need clarification.

Perhaps others know more than I do about this.

Part of my confusion regarding money/gift/donation given to an individual is regarding, if this money was to fund his leadership campaign and there was money left over where does it go. How much money is needed to fund a leadership campaign in a two horse race in the Senedd.

All good questions that are above my pay grade to answer. Some fragments that people can piece together here.

https://www.itv.com/news/wales/2024-05-21/vaughan-gethings-unspent-donations-go-

The gist seems to be that about £31K was unspent, that normally this would have gone to the Labour Party but this was declined, and Gething agreed with the Labour Party's Welsh Executive Committee (39 members) that it could go to "progressive causes". Perhaps somebody else knows if such payments have been made and to whom. The answer to Q2 in my opinion is much less that £200K.

Anyway we must not digress from current events.

I did read it thoroughly and this bit stood out,

The PM defended his right to continue to take football freebies earlier this week, saying: ‘If I don’t accept a gift of hospitality, I can’t go to a game.

‘Never going to an Arsenal game again because I can’t accept hospitality is pushing it a bit far.’

Now on the assumption that is 100% accurate then I have to say, what kind of a screaming idiot is he?
Clearly the kind who loves to call the tories corrupt and hypocrites, people whose judgement is flawed and shouldn't be in power when he clearly doesn't recognise those traits/flaws in himself.

He wants to see a game of football.
Why should he want to see it free

It's really incredible how the opposition can see so much wrong with what the sitting government does but once they are in power they do pretty much the same things but it's all ok for them.

Take freebies Bojo...BAAAD, very bad. Free tickets to the football Sir Keir...it's unreasonable to exoect him to miss football. Of course he can easily afford to oay so he doesn't need the freebie but WHY should he pay, he's entitled after all.

They're all berks.

Can’t see this going anywhere tbh, to me it looks like a non story. If he’d been staying at a hotel, would that have been considered his home address, I doubt it very much.
It may be BS, but the comments about providing his son with an environment where can prepare for his exams without distraction seem reasonable. I suspect most of us would take steps to protect our children from the glare and distraction of the media at a time when they something important like GCSE exams coming up.

I’ve heard a few people make comparisons between King John and Keir Starmer. He’s famous for being a tyrant who would strangle his own nephew in the pursuit of power, use the law to subdue his enemies and taxing the poor until the pips squeak.

King John has a poor reputation too.

Now then, will the BArrister turned PM interfere or will he provide the funding so our legal system is fit for purpose?

The opening few months of this government aren't really a cause for celebration.

Dear Rachel a paragon of virtue

"Rachel Reeves makes a lot of her time working as an economist. After serving in a trio of junior positions at the Bank of England, Rachel says that in 2006 she moved to the Bank of Scotland to work as an “economist,” before leaving in 2009 to serve as MP. Guido spoke to colleagues of Reeves’ from her Bank of England days – one described her as having a reputation for being “f***ing useless”…

Reeves’ boilerplate biography, given to event organisers for her speaking events, says: “Previously, she worked as an economist at the Bank of England, the British Embassy in Washington DC and latterly at Halifax Bank of Scotland.” She is constantly praised for having an “economist brain.” She speaks of her time at HBOS in the midst of the financial crisis: “When economies tumble, it is those on the lowest incomes who suffer most. Some people lost their jobs but also their sense of pride.“ Guido probed these claims after numerous former colleagues of Reeves got in touch to raise questions over her CV…

The Chancellor states on her LinkedIn that she was working as an “economist” at HBOS. This is not true. Guido can reveal that Reeves worked in a mundane support department at the bank, according to multiple former colleagues. Within the Halifax/HBOS Complaints team there was a small support unit which managed administration processes, IT matters, and small projects and planning. It was a team of three people far from the Economics Department. Reeves held a mid-level position. HBOS was acquired by Lloyds in 2009 and the Chancellor left in December of that year to pursue a career in politics…

Reeves has a tendency to be selective about the truth when it comes to her CV – Guido exposed her “chess champion” myth as a falsehood last week. Guido reached out to Reeves’ team – they did not deny she did not work as an “economist” for the bank, but instead said she “covered various areas using her economist background.” As she prepares to drop a huge tax bombshell on Britain, her self-styled claim to be an economic technocrat is unravelling…" and we thought Truss was mad.

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Politicians have The gift of the gab as my late mum used to say , great neigbours included and probably her long drawn out village gossip themes , she enjoyed gossip .

Now Politicians lie to feather their nests for their future nest egg and comfortable retirement package , voters are a payer on the gravy train ride I am on .

A few porkies on a CV and maybe stretching the truth out within limits is accepted .

The ability of the applicant to do the role asked for is more important than a list of passes .

Rachel Reeves it seems another liar at The Front Bench according to this Guido news .

Never come across this reporting in the media before , will look it up .
