The morning after another sickening Saints performance and so many questions. Of the 3 teams promoted we have in theory had the easiest of starts in terms of fixtures and yet you wouldn't think so. We spent £100m in the squad this summer and yet we are not seeing anything like a team that can challenge anyone in the PL (no matter who they are). So:-
- having put in a half decent performance against Ipswich at home why did that team perform so poorly in the first half last night?
- why did Lallana not start the game at least?
- why when we go a goal behind do we seem to collapse/capitulate so readily? We never ever look like coming back?
- Why do we seem so weak mentally and physically to have any fight?
- why amongst our squad do we not have a single striker that looks capable of hitting the back of the net? They haven't scored one goal yet, let alone any notion of them getting to double figures

It’s all about the final third.
If we are playing well but the ball isn’t going in the net, the confidence of the whole team is going to falter.
It’s very difficult to keep positive when nothing you do reaps rewards.
We don’t have prolific strikers but RM didn’t help at all with that team selection up front. | |

And unfortunately, we don't get to that final third very often even when we have the opportunity.
Aribo is the classic example of that. When he came on you'd have thought he'dd have been told to try and get the ball forward but it just seems he's frightened to. The number of times he starts a run then has to stop and check and it goes backwards, not even sideways! |  | | |

An incredibly attacking bench made all the more strange by the fact there were five strikers on it but none on the pitch to start the match, Martin was asked post match what the thinking was behind this decision.
The Southampton manager responded: “We wanted an aggressive bench. We need to win, we need to score more goals. We haven’t scored enough goals. I mean, that was pretty self-explanatory.”

Substitutes are there (unless through injury or a sending off issue) to change things when they are not going right, or want to protect a lead tactically etc, but surely you start with a team that you think will win the game from the off! Not as he always does wait untilwe are behind but don't worry we have match winners sat on their ar5es, thoroughly pi55ed off knowing they could do a better job on the park! | | | |
