If the number of speakers is dropping as so many are not interested, should the budget be reduced to balance this.

The lingua Franca is English. Immigrants have to learn English to benefit ,welsh is a luxury for them, something to get the aah factor. Yma o hyd applies to all Welsh people and English only welsh people are as worthy as welsh onky speakers Bluddy language again I’d rather Wales spends money on its waiting times for those with significant illnesses

Most definitely. If people think the Welsh language is important why as individuals can they not foot the bill? Millions paid out…and continuing to do so by local councils and the Senedd for this cause when it could be better spent elsewhere….such as free school meals etc. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Get my point Luth about the language being divisive ? I’d rather 0% spoke welsh if it meant 100% improvement in services Welsh is not a service ,just something that was spoken in your home growing up.it shouldn’t be the subject if so much hatred Evidence, get to Llyn and see

Maybe the Welsh NHS could make better use of the money ,if people won't to speak Welsh then they will , absolutely nothing is stopping them , nothing except they're own self discipline. We're not living in the 19th century where speaking the language was forbidden there are many ways and help centres like we've never seen before and like I said its done to the desire to learn which sadly isn't there in the numbers there once was.

You would have thought with the number of children being taught in Welsh media schools the numbers would be rising but they are not. From my own experience with my grandchildren going to Welsh speaking schools pre secondary. They speak Welsh in school but not once they leave the school gates. Not with brothers/sisters in the same school, not with friends when they come to play or sleepovers and not when playing team sports. The question is are they Welsh speakers or can they just speak Welsh. In my mind there is a world of difference. As for your question regarding the birth rate. I would say it is more to do with the massive multi cultural influx of people from around the world now residing in Wales which has diluted the Welsh speaking population. Although I am not against the Welsh language full stop, I am against the way we are trying to force it onto a considerable amount of the population who have no interest and feel the money could be better spent elsewhere. I have previously worked closely with the Welsh Assembly and to get funding for many projects you need to incorporate Welsh language and culture into the proposals, just adding more cost and an extra level of administration. Wales needs to have a good hard look at where we are and where we are going in the modern world. Not trying to ram something down people's throats that the majority don't want. By all means promote the Welsh language, but those who want it should pay for it.

And the fact learning Welsh is seen by a vast majority as being irrelevant .Which it is. Getting Wales more prosperous should be pre eminent It seems not Incredible

Not really, the uk govt spends more on the English National Opera than is spent on the welsh language. Its a false choice to suggest its the NHS vs the welsh language. Stop having illegal wars and invest in both. Align with EU and invest in both. Bin the Royals and invest in both. See politics is about choices.

The Senedd spends nothing on the English National Opera. It does spend money on the Welsh language and Health.

The last time I looked the Welsh nation hasn't been at war for centuries . Brexit happened , get over it . The Royals exist again get over it. Your heroes in Cardiff determine where the money donated by Westminster is spent including the NHS . [Post edited 24 Jan 14:55]

Not sure that could be such a big factor when it is compulsory in schools. When every schoolkid has to learn it and some adults are learning it. I think maybe it's that so many people aren't really interested. I don't see many migrants wanting to learn Welsh. I know it's hardly scientific but my son and his friends are all of the same idea, they can force them to lessons but they cannot force them to learn. The number of Welsh speakers has declined in both the 2011 and 2021 censuses to about 538,300 or 17.8 per cent in 2021, lower than 1991. As I have repeatedly said, if people want to learn Welsh then good for them but making it compulsory in schools and forcing bilingual communication on us when so many of us don't speak Welsh is time consuming and costly. We should have higher priorities. But then, as I said in another thread, Drakeford thinks we have too many hospitals which kind of tells you where his priorities are!

I’d go as far as to say that it being forced upon people will mean more resistance. It’s counterproductive.

As I said Cat, I don't know the reasons but less kids in school would mean less learning it. I'm just keen for the language not to die out. Any minority language needs support so I'm ok with (the majority) of the promotion of it.

Number of Welsh-speakers lowest in eight years on 17:00 - Jan 24 with 82 views | Dr_Winston | I'd be interested to see the definition of "speaking Welsh". Are these people fluent and, if not using the language in their daily life, at least doing so regularly, or are they "Welsh Speakers" in the sense that they can understand a bit, but not much? I'd find it hard to belive that there are 800,000 people in Wales fully conversant in the language. [Post edited 24 Jan 17:18]

Well the same report quotes 27% but then goes on to quote the latest official census report which reported a figure of 17%. Rather bizarrely the report seems to contradict itself in a couple of paragraphs. https://www.welshlanguagecommissioner.wales/policy-and-research/research/2021-ce

17% sounds a bit more like it, especially when you factor in rural and Northern areas.

I think there is a lot of confusion between who can speak it and who do speak it and to what level. Singing the national anthem doesn't count.
