Grand National, who are you backing? 07:09 - Apr 5 with 700 views | cocklebreath | It’s not the lottery it used to be but I still love having a bet on it, my massive gambling problem was started by getting the winner when I was about 10. Hello Dandy beat my sisters horse Grease paint, won £10 which felt like a fortune. I’m going for Beauport and Minella indo.

It was the questions we had wrong. |

Really? Shall we ban anything dangerous? Maybe stop people riding bikes?

Grand National, who are you backing? on 18:59 - Apr 5 with 379 views | InTimeAddedOn | It was a win for a horse called Nick Rockett at 33/1, I wonder if our Nick had a cheeky tenner on it 😀 I know my mate Nick in Lynmouth had £20 e/w on it so he’s a happy man tonight. He’ll be down the bookies to collect those winnings like a …. Cocklebreath, your two finished 9th (M/Indo) & 12th (Beauport). With reference to your win as a 10 y/o, when I was the same age my grandmother used to enter a Grand National sweepstake at her pensioners club and had two winners and two places in the previous four years. Year 5 she draws Foinavon out of the sweepstake who was 100/1. She used to save 6d a week for two annual bets, the Boat Race and the National. She used to have a £1 for the National and 5/- for the Boat Race which took 50 weeks to save. My Dad had persuaded her the previous two years to back the same horse at the bookies as she pulled out of the sweepstake but with Fionavon at 100/1 he was telling her it would be a waste of time to back it at the bookies. I remember this debate went on for two days and on the morning of the race it was still going strong. She sloped off to the bookies and put the £1 on it to WIN to teach Dad a lesson. As they watched the race on TV gran was basically staring at the floor thinking what an idiot she’d been as Foinavon was about a fence behind the field. Cue a mass pile up in front of them and the jockey on Fionavon pulled the horse up, surveyed the carnage and changed course and jumped the fence well away from the pile up and rode on home to win unchallenged. Gran nearly had a seizure! In 1967 £100 was a lot of money for a lady that had struggled most of her life to make ends meet. She never won again as she had a life ending cerebral haemorrhage the following year, sat in the same seat, watching the 1968 Grand National. As she hadn’t been feeling well the previous couple of days she didn’t do her usual bet on the day of the race and wasn’t in the pensioners club sweepstake.

People choose to ride bikes. I think it was last year or the year before that 5 horses died at Aintree. Sorry, it’s not for me.

Good on her, the national is an institution in this country.
