After a few days away in Belgium in Bruges & Ypres taking advantage of nothing happening in footballing terms for Saints.

A good trip, the ambience of Bruges plus the WW1 sites around Ypres including the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate was a nice distraction from football.

Have I missed anything.

Sounds like a similar trip to the one I had a few months ago: the Ypres (wipers) last post is certainly a stand out. Standing in a Poppy filled section of Flanders, or seeing where on the 1st July 1916 the 36th Ulster Division picked up 2,000 casualties in one day for their gains; it really puts life in perspective.

Yep this time I went to Hill 60 where thousands got slaughtered on both sides and the front line barely moved

Sounds like a place I’d like to visit. Have you been on the Normandy beaches Nick ? I did Gold beach last year which was very moving. Seeing the Mulberry Harbours just left there in the sea and the huge German guns on the cliff tops that were left behind some of them destroyed by the British was eerie and very emotional. It Brought it home was these guys went through , they have my upmost respect .

The area around Ypres has a lot of WW1 sites and is well worth a visit there are some great places and museums.

I have never been to the Normandy beaches but it is on my list

The Ypres Salient is indeed fascinating, Hill 60 is one of my favourite places, but a lot of the old battlefield has been developed and you're never far from a busy main road. The Somme battlefields, however, are still very rural and quiet by comparison. We went to a little village in the middle of the battlefield called Guiilemont which was the scene of heavy fighting and a local resident invited us in to his shed to look at his collection of shell cases, shrapnel balls, wire pickets and bits of guns he'd dug up in his garden. We also went up to Redan Ridge (via the famous Sunken Lane) where dozens of members of the 1st Hampshires were wiped out on 1st July. With a replica trench map and a bit of imagination you can walk virtually the exact same route they took from their jumping off point on that fateful morning. I could probably quite happily retire to the Somme.

I visited Gold beach whilst enjoying a cruise around France, Spain and Portugal .

Completely off topic but an added bonus during the Gold beach trip was having the opportunity to chat to Dave Merrington who was also on the cruise with his family and his group were placed on our table for lunch. Lovely bloke , like many he couldn’t stand all the tippy tappy rubbish under RM He’s still very much a saints man and he also loved talking about his Burnley days.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.
Poll: Who/what is to blame for the Swansea result?
