Before Stuart Hall was discovered to be a nonce, he was a talismanic figure for us, as we lived in hope of the day when the BBCR5 announcer introduced Hall thus: 'And to Maine Road, and a good day for QPR Stuart Hall?' Whereupon Hall would launch into comparing an Rs win with Sparta's victory over Athens in the Peloponnesian War.
Hall was to appear at Waterstone's on Deansgate to promote his then new book. Several of us managed to do what Waterstone's failed to do, and promoted attendance. Consequently, when Hall appeared, there were only 10 attendees. To his credit, he declined Waterstone's offer to cancel.
Hall opens up by inviting a chap sat to his left to announce his team of choice. 'Citeh!', he replies. Between him and the tenth attendee's disclosing his team, eight chaps proudly responded, 'QPR!'
The evening was consumed with a discussion on QPR in the middle of Manchester and an apology to Hall for the low turnout of Manc Rs. Irony being what it was, I'd left work early in Liverpool to make the event, only to be sat on a non-moving train on the bridge overlooking Deansgate with other commuters for an hour, while a flurry of text messages asked as to my whereabouts.
