After back-to-back away defeats, the U's return home this weekend to take on Crewe Alexandra. The games at Bristol Rovers and Swindon were both true tales of two halves. At Bristol, we were rightly behind at the break but threw everything at the hosts in the second half and were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point. Last week at Swindon it was a different story, as we capitulated after the interval following a dominant first 45 minutes in which we should have been two or three goals to the good. The faithful will be hoping for a complete 90-minute performance this weekend.
Crewe travel to Colchester unbeaten in the league so far this season. They currently sit seventh in the table, two points above the U's, having followed up victories in their opening two matches (1-0 at Crawley and 1-0 at home to Northampton) with a run of three successive draws (0-0 at Port Vale, 2-2 at home to Walsall, and 1-1 at home to York). Only three goals conceded, but at the same time, only five scored. That suggests Crewe are a defensive side grinding out results, but far from it, they've had 75 shots in those games!
While we come into the game with nothing from our last two, I think it's worth pointing out that Bristol Rovers and Swindon occupy the top two places in the league at the moment. We were dominant and attacking in those games, so I think we have it in us to secure three points this weekend. The key question is whether we'll take the game to Crewe from the outset or adopt a more cautious approach.
Much of the team virtually picks itself. I'd expect the same starting XI as last week, although KVY's fitness could change things. If he's available, Rob Hunt is probably the man most at risk of dropping out.
Despite thinking we can win this one, I'm not quite confident enough to predict it. Either we'll take the lead and Crewe will come at us and get an equaliser, or the complete opposite. So it's a 1-1 draw from me. I'm going to say Sesay for the goal, he'll confidently dribble the ball, shake off a challenge or two, and then drill it in from outside the box.
The forecast for the game is sunny intervals with temperatures reaching 24°C. There's a very slim chance of rain showers.
Lastly, I'd like to focus on a single player for played for both – Chris Porter. Now retired after a 21-year career spanning 682 appearances and 196 goals, he's now working as a property manager. The U's and Crewe were the two clubs he made the most appearances for. He arrived at Colchester in January 2015 from Sheffield United and was with us for two-and-a-half seasons, scoring 30 goals in 95 appearances. He was also named captain. He joined Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2017, after rejecting a contract offer from us. He went on to enjoy five seasons at Gresty Road, scoring 54 goals in 189 appearances. His performances over the following three seasons showed that he still had so much to offer at this level. He was back playing in League One in 2020! Over three years after we'd decided he wasn't worth a longer contract in League Two!

U's lucky to be 1-0 up a halftime, but I'll take it. Pleased for Thorn, he was having a bit of a mare, but his touch and cross to put it on a plate for Harry was sublime. Tough second half coming up I reckon.
Two points dropped, subs invited visitors on to us and with all those defenders and no outlet , could not keep a clean sheet. Final ten minutes played like an away side holding on for something . DC has to take the blame for this one .
Good sides in this situation win, bad sides lose and average sides get a draw .

Then we don’t beat those below us and the malaise since Robbie Cowling bought the club reoccurs.
His valuation is patently ridiculous if the training ground is excluded as the club has zero assets except residual player contracts, last week’s stale hot dogs and the goodwill of league two status plus 1700 loyal ST holders. The other 1800 will walk away if we don’t make progress now DC that has had his honeymoon period. He didn’t deserve the abuse he got Saturday, but the tide is patently turning.
