Marvellous - BBC2 last night 14:07 - Sep 26 with 3427 viewsKonk

Did anyone watch "Marvellous" on BBC2 last night? I really enjoyed it - thought Toby Jones was great. Cheery, life-affirming stuff that made me have a bit of a sob at times. Also reminded me of the immense good that football can bring to people's lives.

For a bit of a taster:

I love Toby Jones so I recorded it, on the planner for me to watch this week. Heard good things.

People also on about Chasing Shadows, anybody seen it? It's got Reece Shearsmith in who I am a big fan of so might try if people think it's worth it

Great programme, something that the Brits are very good at making. Jones is a very talented actor. Macari, a bloke I hated in the past was portrayed as a man with a heart. Great stuff.

Chasing Shadows was a complete waste of time. Thank god Marvellous was on, as the wife would have watched it and even she didn't really like it.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

The wife wanted a different program on last night so I decided to view it from catch up.

Pleased to see that I won't be wasting my time!

I thought it was very clever when 'Nello' appeared in person and talked to the actor playing him as part of the story, ditto Luigi Macari. You could pick holes in the continuity but as a heart warming story it was excellent.

I was so impressed that I tried to start a thread on this programme myself this morning but got distracted.Glad someone else has felt moved to acknowledge its excellence. I found it thoroughly engaging and innovative in style; I liked the occasional interventions and comments by the character Neil Baldwin himself and Lou Macari. Toby Jones was highly convincing and some cracking naive, straight-faced comments at times, e.g. when he told the Job Centre that he wanted to be a Football Manager - any club, preferably Stoke City...but maybe not Port Vale!!

I reflected a few times on how to remain positive in adversity and how to consider others different and less privileged than ourselves; so a salutary lesson that Lou Macari appeared to appreciate.

I was surprised The Times only gave it 3* as I reckon it was excellent TV.

I don't remember the character though?

Completely agree.

Lovely programme. Moving and, to a degree, inspirational.

And good to see a different side to someone's character that you rarely get in football. Lou Macari came across very well. Really quite a good person.

Definitely worth watching.

Which was strange as he set up the team when Macari was in charge of Stoke, which I believe was about 89-92 !!!

I think they were allowed a little artistic licence!

I was going to look up when he was manager of Stoke but don't need tio now. Does anyoneknow whose testimonial it was that he "played" in?

saw most of it and will catch it up asap....what got me was the stoke thing and how he soon become part of the club, he supported them for yrs, but how the fans, players reacted to him ....we were like that a while back.
the prem lge has taken our game from ordinary folk and polished it up for corporate and "modern fans"....
